Lake Superior changes from day to day, no matter the season. But in the winter, it seems like she gets worked up more often with the wind and snow the Keweenaw sees. George C. Bailey always has a front row seat to Lady Superior’s antics and he recorded these shots this past week on the north shore of the Keweenaw Peninsula, west of Copper Harbor. I found the last two photos to be intriguing. First off, that such a large chunk of ice was washed up closer to the shore and deposited on the ice already there and secondly, because of the amazing blue color of the chunk. E. Neil Harri explained what causes that beautiful coloring of the ice on George’s page, saying, It is older ice that the air bubbles have been crushed so more dense. It refracts light on the blue light spectrum. Same reason it’s blue in glaciers, because it’s old ice.” Interesting indeed!
