There was some wild weather yesterday, with high winds and gusts around 50 mph here in the Keweenaw. It really buffeted the shoreline along M26 and thanks to Sarah Derry and her hubby, Tom, who braved the wind and cold, we have some dandy photos to prove those Gales of November.
Check out the size of the waves in those first two shots. Sarah estimated them to be around 15 to 20 feet. Really something to see and hear in person. The remaining photos show the rocks and water that were washed up onto and over the road. I believe the first road shot is just as you’re coming out of Eagle Harbor and the last two, perhaps the Cat Harbor curve, the first one going north and the second coming back south again. It’s amazing the power in the wind and waves of Lake Superior.
Sarah made a video along M26, too, so we can get a good idea of what it was like standing there, except no wind trying to knock us over and no cold to freeze our cheeks and fingers.

Great pics & video!! I recognized Cat Harbor right away, it always takes a punishment from the Gales. Always reminds me of the quote from my uncle Rudy Aittama... "always build on higher ground" !! Hope to be U.P. mid month, but we'll see if we can put this trip together. Happy Monday All!! :))

When I was a kid in the 50s & 60s there was a picnic table on a sandy beach at Cat Harbor. We had a few picnics there. The water line was probably lower back then .

Fierce pix and don't forget to full-screen the video...excellent! Cat Harbor curves were always a sweet ride on the Wing.

Nice photos showing the power of the lake! I always love watching all the different moods the lake has during the different seasons.
