Horseshoe Harbor is part of the Mary MacDonald Preserve at the tip of the Keweenaw, near Copper Harbor. Marcy Bessolo Hermanson was up there exploring this past weekend and shares some photos of the conglomerate rock formations in the area. The preserve webpage says that these “rock ridge shorelines were formed 600 million years ago”. That’s pretty amazing! By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Saturday, June 20, 2020 - 11:08 pm: Beautiful area, but they are a little off on their age of formation for the conglomerates. And, they don't mention anything about the most fascinating feature in the Harbor, the stromatolites. By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Sunday, June 21, 2020 - 12:04 am:

Nearby at Hunter's Point there are similar formations that some have also called stromatolites. Others only go so far as saying they were created by cyanobacterial action. Locals have called them "The Hieroglyphs". |
