When the temperatures drop to single digits and below here UP North, our feathered friends need extra help in finding food for the energy they need to stay warm. Edward Korpi and his wife, Laurie Bashaw know that and put out a variety of treats and the bonus is, Edward gets some great photo opportunities. These shots today are just a few of their visitors, including a Pileated Woodpecker, a Downy Woodpecker, a Redpoll (correct me if I’m wrong on this one, as I’m not quite sure), turkeys on the ledge and turkeys in the trees. Funny how those turkeys get right up there on the railing, so they can reach the suet bags. They are resourceful, for sure. Laurie said they wondered if it might be warmer for the turkeys when they roost in the trees like that. I’m guessing it’s safer from the predators for sure.
Now you get a chance to watch a Pileated Woodpecker in action on a winter day. They’re big birds and can make some big holes in the trees with that beak!

I always think of FJL (Langoman) when we have pictures of Pileated Woodpeckers!
