Last week was Winter Carnival at Michigan Tech. Today’s photos were snapped by Paul and Nathalie Brandes (a.k.a. Capt. Paul and Dr. Nat), who were visiting for the festivities. Thursday was the All-Nighter competition for the statue building. They toured around campus and snapped a few shots of the construction in process. The first shot is the over in Hancock at the Phi Kappa Tau statue, complete with scaffolding in place to work on the tall parts of the statue.
In the second photo, Paul wasn’t sure which sorority was working on this one, but he said it had statues of Ice Age characters, including Manny, Millie, Diego, and Sid. Note the use of an iron to smooth out the texture of the snow on the character on the left. These engineers know all the tricks.
That’s a sabertooth cat in the third photo, from the Tau Kappa Epsilon statue. At that point, they were attaching the head and when the students found out Nat was a historical geologist, they enlisted her help to get the muscle structure of the cat correct. Sure looks good to me!
TV6’s Jake Swope was on campus for the All-Nighter phase of construction, in front of the Michigan Tech Alumni house, with a little hands-on demonstration. Stay tuned Tuesday and Wednesday this week, with more coverage of the Winter Carnival.
