Just a little over a week ago, Nancy Haun was driving down the main street in Houghton, Sheldon Avenue, when she decided to snap a shot of the street up ahead. Still plenty going on in downtown Houghton, especially now, with the shopping for the holidays getting into full swing again.
Nancy’s second photo was taken up in Centennial Heights. This stone boat isn’t as well known as the one in Kearsarge, mostly because it’s not on the main highway. There were actually three of these boats built during the early 1930’s as projects during the Great Depression, to keep people working and were funded by federal money from the government. The third boat was constructed on US41, but all that's left of that "boat" is a pile of rubble, overgrown with trees and bushes.
Today's video has appeared here on the Pasty Cam before and has become somewhat of a classic from when it was first made. In searching for something to accompany the "downtown Houghton" photo, it came up in the results and I couldn't resist posting it again today. How to turn left in the U.P… it's that time of year once again.

Just wait until they bring in Round-A-Bouts.

Most certainly this video inspired more round-a-bouts!

There was a really bad round-a-bout accident out here last week. So nothing's perfect. And that video doesn't make me laugh a bit. It scares the crap out of me, lol.

After all the Winters I spent in the U.P., I am SO glad I never had a car.

Ransom Bird Shelden Sr. … was the founder of Houghton …
The main street of Houghton, variously called "Sheldon Street," (inaccurately) "Shelden Avenue" and "Sheldon Avenue," [also inaccurately! -FRN] was named in Shelden's honour.
I knew him well.
Er… maybe not, I'm not quite that old, I just feel like it some days!
And Centennial Heights? My mom and dad were both born in Centennial Heights, but seven years apart in age, they never met until they both wound up in Detrioit!
"Turning Left in Houghton": Been there, done that! which brings up a question:
Q: What are snowbanks (on the North/south streets in Houghton)? A: Emergency brakes.
