The Quincy Mine shaft sitting atop the Quincy Hill is a landmark that many folks look for as they cross the Bridge from Houghton to Hancock/Ripley. This is where much history of the copper mining here in the Keweenaw is stored, since you can ride a tram car down the hill and tour the mine, along with the tours in the buildings around the campus there.
Capt. Paul (Brandes) supplied us with today’s photos as he and his wife, Dr. Nat (Nathalie Brandes) were there preparing for the presentation Dr. Nat will be giving there, at 7:00 p.m., August 1st, as part of the History on the Hill series. She will be talking about the history of mining, from the earliest mines in the Paleolithic (Old Stone Age) and will progress into the Copper Age, Bronze Age, and Iron Age, discussing important technological advances and techniques that became the foundations of the modern mining industry.
Today’s video gives some background history of the beginnings of the Quincy Mine and was the first in the series “Keweenaw Stories” with Ranger Kristen Schmitt, produced by Dan Johnson, back in 2009. If you enjoy this short video, then mark your calendar for Thursday and Dr. Nat’s presentation to delve further into the history of mining.

Any chance Dr. Nat's presentation will be recorded for those who can't make this date? It would be one of my most watched Pasty videos!

Thanks for everyone's interest in this. If you are able to come to the presentation, please be sure to say hello to me and Paul. We love meeting people from the Pasty community. If you aren't able to make it, I have no idea if it will be recorded. Sorry about that. Best wishes to everyone!
