Happy Veterans Day! Here is a refresher for you, in case you aren’t sure what Veterans Day is all about: Veterans Day always falls on November 11th, celebrating the end of World War I fighting at 11:00 a.m., November 11, 1918 – The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. It’s the day we nationally honor our military veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces in all wars.

To honor and thank those who have served, we have a beautiful sunset flag photo from Jean Dessellier, along with a photo of the Houghton Veterans Park from Donna MacIntosh. The park is located on the small bluff above the “Yooper Loop” as you’re coming in to Houghton from the Portage Lake Lift Bridge. Access is from above, across from Little Caesar’s Pizza on Montezuma Avenue. It’s a nice tribute to local veterans, with a great view of the Lift Bridge as a bonus.

The remaining two photos were also snapped by Donna… a friendly looking deer keeping an eye on her and a fall view of Mont Ripley Ski Hill. Donna noted that they have the snow making machines out and at the ready, should the temperatures get cold enough for artificial snow and we don’t have enough of the real thing falling by then.

Our video is a prelude to GivingTuesday, from Upper Michigan Source – TV6 & Fox UP, highlighting something new this year... a way to amplify your donations to non-profits. Copper Shores says this about GivingTuesday: “Held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, GivingTuesday has grown to be the single largest day of fundraising for charities and organizations throughout the nation. Serving as a kick-off to the holiday giving season, and a day of radical generosity, individuals can give back to the community and donate to the organizations that mean the most to them.

Donations open tomorrow - Tuesday, November 12 - and go through GivingTuesday on December 3rd. To learn more about GivingTuesday, visit CopperShores.org Giving Tuesday

The first pic is a doozy and a fitting tribute.

And remembering The Edmund Fitzgerald
and Ed Chaput (EddyFitz).

First off, Happy Veteran's Day to all who have served. We appreciate you more than you could ever know.

I remembered the Fitz right away yesterday morning, and played The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Every November 10th I do that, and watch the lighting of the Split Rock Lighthouse. Unfortunately, I forgot to watch the ceremony from Whitefish Point last night. I was so sad, but maybe it's on YouTube.

Really nice pictures today. I, too, took a picture of the
Veteran's Park in Houghton, Donna. Great minds. Love the cute little deer. They're just so pretty.

Interesting that they're getting ready to make snow. It doesn't know if it wants to rain or snow here today. But the wind is crazy!

Have a great day, everybody, and remember to thank a vet.

Happy Veteran's Day! Freedom is not Free! Thank you veterans and active military!

Deb, i do think you can watch the ceremony online - the speaker was excellent and of course the ringing of the bell is so touching.

I think the voting closed at noon. I voted a bit after 11:30am and it said there were 22 minutes left to vote.

We voted also...very early today was OK...multi-voting tricks may have caused this?

I watched a televised interview with deck hand Bruce Hudson's mother about him before he lost his life on the Edmund Fitzgerald. He was all set up to travel to California with a fellow crew mate in his 1974 Dodge Challenger he bought new after they returned from this last voyage of the Fitz. Bruce had a daughter born in June 1976 he never got to see. Ruth, Bruce's mother said he would have been very proud. She treasured her grand daughter. This same interview went to the current owner of this Challenger Bruce bought new. The car
is in still the same condition as it was when his mother dropped him off to board the Fitz.It was a good program that left you smiling and yet brought tears to know those men lost their lives way too soon.

I just tried...Voting is closed.

Happy Veterans Day to all. This day really makes me think of my old buddy Dave. He was one of the first people I met when I moved to Baraga. He was a POW in Nazi Germany. They fed them bread made out of sawdust. He told me "I musta ate 5 or 6 trees" and got home just skin and bones. We met weekly at the laundromat, and his daughter called me "his laundromat girlfriend." LOL What our ancestors went through is just unimaginable. They are all heroes in my eyes.

The Fitz ceremony was just magnificent. Audio was a bit challenged now and again...but overall...stunning.

Bummer the wind wasn't blowing those flags that day. The sunset pic is amazing. And that lil deer was out in the woods someplace near Oskar Bay area?? No brain, no pain. :D
