The two birds in the photos here today aren’t exactly rare for the area, but they’re ones we don’t often see and when you do see them, it’s usually for a day and then they’re gone, so most likely they’re just passing through.

The first two shots were snapped by Gladys Collins in her West Ishpeming back yard, an Indigo Bunting. The coloring is absolutely brilliant and it is sometimes referred to as a scrap of sky with wings, also nicknamed “blue canaries”, because of the song they whistle from late spring and into summer. Such a beautiful bird!

The bottom two photos were captured by David Koski in his Michigamme back yard. The Red-Headed Woodpecker isn’t a usual visitor to your feeding station and with that brightly colored head, you can’t miss them when they stop by for lunch. David said that since he retired, he now has the opportunity to view the wildlife during the day and is enjoying sharing what he has missed while working before.

906 Outdoors shares an episode that includes Fly fishing for smallmouth bass on a small U.P. river, a look at Ghost Pipe, nature’s pain reliever and the Birds of Spring. At around 21.07 in the video, he features the Indigo Bunting and you’ll get to hear it’s song, too!

Two beautiful birds for sure. I
just love the indigo bunting. And
you're right, they don't stick
around nearly long enough. Always
fun to see a woodpecker of any
kind. Beautiful shots. Us retirees
do enjoy the simple things.

They’re headed through towards the
Tornado Blue Jays.
And if that’s an Indigo Bunting,
where’s the bat???

And do you think that those guys fishing
are having any fun at all???

By Donna (Donna) on Tuesday, May 28, 2024 - 10:33 am:

Those lil' birds are beauties and it's hard to get
a pic of them. They see any movement and they are
gone right now!

I always thought the ghost pipe was a protected
species....guess not!!

I'm so addicted to Discovering!

Greetings to all:

'da UP has a lot to offer in places where one would drive on by. There are the birds at Seney, Michigan but did you know that AuTrain has a Songbird Trail (2).

The trails are closer to M-94 and Alger County Road H-03 but either way will take you to the Songbird trails. When you see Forest Road 2276 head East and follow the signs to the Hiawatha National Forest entrance.

AuTrain Songbird Trail I'd post photos if I knew how.

Early Fall is best - No Bugs.

All Seniors should have their National Parks, get in / park FREE, Passes by now.
