The old saying for March weather is, “In like a Lion, out like a Lamb”, so since we had a doozy of a storm on Wednesday, Feb. 28th, which closed the local schools, does that count? Steve Brimm described the Big Blow as “blowing like stink”, which he wondered where that phrase came from. I hadn’t heard of it before, so I did a bit of Internet searching and didn’t come up with anything conclusive, except the speculation that it’s an old nautical term. But no matter it’s origin, it seems like the perfect description of the storm in Steve’s photos here today.

Steve also shares a video from the day before the Big Blow, when the sun was shining and Lake Superior was calm. A beautiful, quiet morning on the shores of Copper Harbor.

This is what I got for "Blow like Stink" (which
I've never heard before)

: Where does the phrase "blow like stink" come
from?

Maybe it relates to a phrase previously posted:

"Let's go outside and get the stink blown off us."
Interesting phrase and environmentally sound.
Indoor air is way more polluted than outdoor air.
Today tightly sealed houses keep fresh air out and
keep chemicals (like "outgassing" from wood
paneling, etc.) animal dander, dust mites, etc.
in. In the old days houses were draftier but most
people didn't have central heat and indoor
plumbing. There was plenty of pollution from
woodstoves and it was it's difficult to stay dewy
fresh without hot water on tap.

Whatta blow indeed...but it wasn't March! We shall
see what happens....eh!

Fierce, powerful pix/mellow vibes video!
I believe that UC’s dad used to say;
“Blow off the stink.” when he took a
trip UP north. And I know what he meant.

I really like the tree.

I think "stink" has been a more polite replacement for less acceptable euphemisms. Saying "••••" or "Hades" decades ago was usually unacceptable.

LOL, even today our own Pasty censor didn't like "HE double hockey sticks".

These pics are just the best!! If I could put that
video and sound on a continuous loop that would be
great to fall asleep to.

Yes, Alex as I recall and the only way I've heard it
called was, "Blow the stink off", but I do
understand, blow like stink, meaning take cover lol.
That second pic is what I think of as a winter pic
of Superior. Great stuff!!
