Nancy Haun snapped today’s views from the Bishop Baraga Shrine. The grounds are always open, year round and have some of the best views of Keweenaw Bay and surrounding area. This year especially has been a good year to visit the grounds in the winter, since there isn’t much snow, so you can walk the grounds, view the statue and the panoramic views across the Bay. If you haven’t been there in a while or ever, you should make plans to stop and see some of the things you’ve been missing. They’ve added on to the little Gift Cabin and will be adding some other improvements, including a deck on the front and side so visitors can sit there and chat. Local art is featured for sale in the Gift Cabin when it is open. Funds from sales all go to the upkeep of the Shrine and future projects like electric service so the shrine can be lit up at night, along with possibly offering refreshments when the cabin is open.
Of course the Bishop Baraga Statue is the main attraction and first time visitors are amazed at the size and beauty of this huge work of art. Mark your calendar for July 2nd, which will be the yearly "Healing Mass”. After Mass Fr. Corey will do private Blessings with Bishop Baraga's Crucifix. All are invited and many from different Faiths come for the Blessing. They will have refreshments and make sure to bring a chair. The kids have a good time and can really stretch their legs around the grounds.
Even though the Copper Dog races have been canceled due to the lack of snow, there are many events still happening in Calumet this coming weekend, March 1st, 2nd & 3rd. An video overview of the Copper Dog weekend, hosted by Krissy Tepsa and produced by brockit.com, is featured by Visit Keweenaw, highlighting all the happenings. When I saw the titles of these pictures, I knew they were Nancy's. I love the view from up there, and especially the shrine. The healing mass sounds like something I'd like to do. Thanks for promoting it. I love the beautiful swans. Winter came back to the Keweenaw last night. The temperature dropped 30° in just a few hours. The wind is swirling and it's winter. Nice to see March come in like a lion. It's supposed to be back in the 50's by the weekend. What a strange winter we're having

Ah yes…Baraga, my old stomp’n grounds. The drive on 41 along the shoreline of Keweenaw Bay on the back of the Wing was one of my favorite rides. I wish that I could attend the Healing Mass, but I’ll be there in spirit. I’ve marked my calendar. My prayer request? One more ride.

I’m just wondering; Is this the first time that the Copper Dog race has been cancelled due to lack of snow?

Alex, I believe so. Krupp's resort in Twin Lakes is really suffering. I feel so badly for them. They're trying to sell hats and shirts to make some money and stay open. What a different winter UP here.

Beautiful pics and really sorry to hear that the Copper Dog Races have been cancelled.
Alex, when I see those pics or drive by there, I always show Vic, the place you liked to stay at when on the Wing. I wish I could give you one more ride on the Wing my friend. I can just see you leaning into the curves on 26 from Copper Harbor to Eagle River!!
Deb, we camped a few days at Krupp's for a few days until our spot was available in the Keweenaw. Nice quiet place and a really nice area. I wouldn't mind having some acreage in that area. It's wide open and a vast area all the way to Ontonagon or down to Watersmeet.

UC, we also stayed there in 2019. Great place to stay. My cousin lives in the first house after Krupp's and they love it there. Beautiful spot.

Did you guys stay right at Krupp's or Twin Lake State Park? I've camped at the State Park a couple of times now & it is very nice. It's never as crowded as the other State Parks in the area. Krupp's delivers & sells fire wood at the Park each evening. I stopped at Krupp's for a most excellent Pasty each morning. After talking to Krupp's about their camping areas, I think I'd prefer the Park.

D.A., we stayed right at Krupp's. We brought our boat and it was wonderful. I also stayed at the park years ago and enjoyed that.

DA, Had to stay at Krupp's because at that time my rig was 35' long and the campground could not accommodate me at that time because of lack of availability.
