It’s not very often you find the Copper Country with no snow for Christmas and into the last week of December, but that’s the case this year. We had such dense fog and mist last week, that flights couldn’t come in or go out for a day. Barbara Bouwkamp snapped these photos on a walk around Laurium, the first two on Pewabic Street, where you can just barely see the people walking their dog up ahead. The third photo was snapped of St. Paul Lutheran Church on the corner of Tamarack and Second Streets. You can barely make out the cross on the top of the steeple, so I guess you can understand why flights were grounded.
The fourth photo is Barbara’s home as she was returning from her walk-around. In case you’re wondering about the ladder propped up on the porch roof, Barbara said that her husband is proactive and puts the ladder up so he can shovel off the roof when it’s loaded with snow. The ladder lives there all winter.
Today’s video is a brief look at Yooper Creoles: Finnish Music in the Copper Country. It features Finnish miner’s son Oren Tikkanen, from Calumet and his collaborative adventures with performers both past and present, at house parties, halls, taverns and festivals, back in the 1970’s. You can find the full length film and other films like it at UPNorthFilms.com

Eerie pix. Are you sure it wasn’t lunchtime and someone smashed into a semi-truck loaded with pea green soup? Which reminds me of a joke: What did you have for breakfast? Pea green soup. What did you have for lunch? Pea green soup. What did you have for dinner? Pea green soup. What did you do all night? Pea green soup.
And that was a cool video! I think I heard someone say that the music was half Scottish and I’m pretty sure I played drums with those dudes for a day, one week.
“Oh, yeah, man. I played with those dudes, man. Yeah, last year at the Fillmore, man. Me and the bass player sat in, man.” (Cheech & Chong, “ Santa Claus And His Old Lady “)

I like those pics...and what a huge, glorious house! I hope you have a housecleaner...On the other hand, I'm in a handicapped apt...which I call "My Cell".
Always enjoy the foggy pictures! Thanks Barb! Easier to walk thru than a couple feet of snow, eh? Looks like a bit of snow and some blustery conditions for the rest of the week.
Such a beautiful home! I thought maybe the ladder was there to put up/take down the Christmas decorations!

I love the fog. There's something mysterious about it. What a strange year is been. We went to Minnesota the last weekend of December and there's no snow there either. Was nice to come home and not have to catch up on shoveling.
Beautiful home.
