Judy Byykkonen picked a sunny day last week to drive out to Calumet Waterworks Park (a.k.a. Bucky’s). She mentioned that Lakeshore Drive has been newly repaved, so the drive is quite nice and the colors were just popping. Autumn here in the Keweenaw hung on much longer than usual it seems, of course that depends on location, too. Closer to Lake Superior, the leaves change later, than the ones further inland. Then once Judy got to the park, the sunshine and bright leaves made a canopy of light, joined by a blanket of leaves on the park grounds. That last photo is something else with the colors just beckoning you to come to Lake Superior’s shores.

While we’re talking about Lake Superior, I thought it would be a good time to share this video about the Last Families of the Isle Royale Cabins. It’s an interesting look at the families who owned cabins on the Island in Lake Superior before the National Park Service took over. Complete with interviews of some of the family members and the memories they have of summers growing up on the Island.

Beautiful! I can't pick a favorite. I love seeing the lake, but I love the carpeted ground and the beautiful colors on the road.
Just stunning!

Nice set of pix and an interesting video.
I’m partial to the first and second pix…
I’m imagining a cruise down those roads on the Goldwing.

Those are so stunning.

I wonder how many homes on the island are still inhabited?? Most have returned to the island and are left to go back to nature...

Judy sure takes some pretty pictures. Thanks for posting.

The life leases for the many families have long been a controversy that goes on still today. The National Park Service is about to embark on a brand new series of decision making regarding the fate of so many homes and structures from more than a century ago.

Some believe they should mostly all disappear, either gradually or be torn down. These people mostly hang their hat on the wilderness designation that Congress imposed in 1976. Others (like me) believe they are part of the history and heritage just as much as all the other indigenous humans that came earlier to fish, hunt and mine copper.

Ultimately, it boils down to money in order to maintain the structures. Without life lease families allowed to use the cabins and maintain them, the money must come from the park service or others.

Beautiful pictures for this time of year.
Interesting video, I didn't know about the homesteads on the island. I've still have never been there and with my health conditions and not being much of a hiker because of them, not sure how much I'd be able to see of the islands.

One more happy Saturday note, Congrats to the Lake Linden Lakes football team, for another impressive victory today as they continue their playoff march. They head downstate to Marion next weekend, for the semifinals. GO LAKES, I've really enjoyed following these young men and learning some of their names. Plus, the Yooper broadcast from "Jimmy the Greek" and his accent and the commercials, are music to my ears!! lol

TCB NEXT WEEKEND BOYS, TAKE NO PRISIONERS-GOOD LUCK!!

They handed North Dickenson their SECOND loss in
three years...both this year, and both from the
LAKES! GO TEAM!!!
