When 906 Images shared today’s Keweenaw color photos, he mentioned that Mt. Baldy in Eagle Harbor is one of his favorite hikes in the U.P. and the Keweenaw. It is a six mile round trip hike to the top of Mt. Baldy and back again. From the established parking lot for the Helmut and Candis Stern Preserve at Mt. Baldy, you’ll hike 1.6 miles to the preserve boundary. Then it’s another 1.4 miles to the top. It’s a steady uphill three mile climb and can take 2 hours to reach the summit, but the views of Lake Superior, Eagle Harbor and the Keweenaw Peninsula are worth the effort it takes to get there. I recall the first time I made the climb, I reached what I thought was the top and was disappointed as there were trees blocking the view, then I looked further north and realized I wasn’t quite to the top of Mt. Baldy yet and still had a little ways to go. And yes, it was well worth the hike to take in the views like you see in today’s outstanding photos.

We’ll round out the day with a video recorded by 906 Images of a Lake Superior sunrise at the Cove at Presque Isle Park in Marquette. With the windy, rainy weather lately, the waves have been absolutely beautiful, splashing and crashing on the rocks around Presque Isle.

Man, these are some sweet pix.
Looks like a perfect day too.
I always wondered why it was called
Mt. Baldy…now I see why. I wish I would
have made that hike, but I never knew
that much about it.
Another woulda, shoulda, coulda.

Absolutely breathtaking! Too much of a climb
for me these days so it's nice to see the
pictures.

I loved the video.

My quick reaction to the 1st photo was Brockway. That trail looks pretty easy, i.e. no rugged footing etc., like a stroll in the woods. Is the only hard part (other than the distance) just the elevation change? Or are there other walking factors to deal with e.g. rocks and roots?

I have reservations and mixed feelings about non-profit organizations like the Nature Conservancy, but especially smaller non-profits that are buying up land. Of course it seems like a good thing but some of the smaller outfits have simply found a way for a group of rich people to acquire land for mostly private use, and do it all with tax free funds, often with additional minority contributions from "non-voting" people.
