As promised, more “off the beaten path” from Cindy Conway & Mike Donnelly, the third and last for their recent explorations. They share a few of their favorite shots from hikes at the William B. Derby Nature Preserve, just east of Cedarville. She described it as a truly magical forest with small to giant mossy boulders scattered throughout. It is described as hummocky topography. I had no clue what that meant, but found the definition of a hummock to be a small knoll or mound above ground...which creates an uneven or undulating surface texture. You can see that topography in today’s photos. The limestone/dolomite is porous, so cedar trees grow right on and over the boulders. There are several trails to hike in the preserve, which was named after the landowner who sold it at a significant bargain sale. This preserve is the most popular community preserve in the Les Cheneaux region. Looks like a fun place to explore!
906 Outdoors brings us to destination Tahquamenon Country for a look at things to do and places to see in the Newberry, Paradise area. There are plenty of family friendly things to do around the area after you visit the Tahaquamenon Falls. Time to add more to your bucket list!

Moss is pretty until it starts to overtake your lawn.
I am saddened to learn today that Kaleva Cafe closed this past May. They always had the best breakfast.
