Deb and Ron Simons have had some daily visitors coming to feast on the bird seed that drops from their feeders. Deb figures this one is last year’s fawn and they actually had the two of them coming in for a while, but the bigger one doesn’t come around anymore, so they must have split up. She also said the mother comes in, but at a different time and they figure she’ll be bringing this year’s babies around soon.

My favorite is their cats, Otis (black kitty) and Max (gray kitty) out there at a distance, checking out what that deer is doing in their yard. Then the bottom photo, you can see the deer eyeing up Deb snapping photos. Or maybe she’s smiling for her portrait. Either way, they are fun to watch, as long as they aren’t eating your flowers or garden.

Today’s video selection is from Far From Ordinary, who share 8 things to do on the Keweenaw Peninsula, from cascading waterfalls, to beautiful hikes around Lake Superior. Get out there and enjoy the beauty!

Great pictures Deb! Maybe the deer is asking Ron what is inside that tall fence and telling him to take it down so she can have a taste! Like Mary, i like the shot that includes the kitties.

Hey, anyone heard from UC?

Hope Capt. Paul and Dr. Nat made it safely to the CC! I continue to enjoy Capt's book and wish i had had it when i visited almost all the places he highlights in the book.

Since these pictures were taken, there have
been changes. They no longer can eat the
bird food because we've had to take it down.
Mama bear and her cub have walked right
through our yards and up the hill in front
of our houses. The DNR suggested we put the
feeders away for a bit. We think it's
because of all of the machinery up on the
old tracks where they're fixing the trails
for ATV's, snowmobiles, side by sides, etc.
We've invaded their territory so they've
invaded ours. Of course that's all
speculation, but it makes sense. Also, mama
deer had two fawns that she brings down with
her now and omgosh. What fun we are having
watching them prance around her, race around
the yard, and just show off. She gets
frustrated with them and kicks them away
from her. But they persist, lol. And she
doesn't allow the deer in these pictures
anywhere near the yard, even when she
doesn't have her babies with her. There are
also two other deer coming around. They are
not like these ones, who let us walk out to
them with corn and stand there taking to
them. These ones are very skittish. One is
not real big and the other one is huge.
They're all a joy to watch and we enjoy
them. And it's pretty easy to tell which is
which. This one here walks right up to our
deck when she's out of corn. Bold little
girl, she is. I don't know if they remember
us from last year but she listens to us when
we talk to her.

Jbuck, UC was in Manistique a few days ago.
They seem to be enjoying all of the sights
on the way up and UC says Vic is enjoying
playing tour guide with those they're
traveling with. I'm sure we'll hear from the
Capt soon. We usually do breakfast or lunch
with him them one of the days they're here.
Ron will have to get him to sign his book
for him.

That is just so stunning!!

Deb, have you had a buck come in? When I was
feeding them...the yard would be full...THEN a
buck would walk in and all the females backed out
of the way. And I mean backed out...they kept
their eyes on the big boy~ That was just awesome
to witness.

Those deer are a blast...AND the bear WILL leave
once the free food is gone. I've had that pleasure
as well. lol...a HUGE black bear laying on the
ground, licking his paw, slapping the ground and
licking off the seed. With a sliding glass door
between us!

One night, he was in looking, and all of a sudden
ran to a huge pine tree, stood up and hugged it,
and I thought "good God, WHAT scares a bear?" It
was a Mom and Dad fox with a kit....

I used to live up behind Baraga State Park. The
scents of garbage and grilling had a wide range of
critters checking it out!

Donna, we have only seen a buck a few times
and all in the same year. It was quite a few
years ago and he was still young. He always
came with, who we thought was, his sister.
In fact, my screen saver on my laptop is
still him. He was beautiful with his velvety
antlers. Since then it's been all females.
Well, who knows about the fawns.

And with dumpsters in town at businesses
now, the bears no longer have to go to the
dump. They can feast right here in town.

You definitely had a prime spot for
wildlife.

Wow…great pics Deb and come deer season Ron won’t even need a
firearm, just a good ball peen hammer. :-) (Just kidding)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, July 15, 2023 - 07:56 pm:

Alex, Ron has had so many shoulder surgeries
that he can no longer hold a gun to his
shoulder. Since I'm not a fan of venison,
I'm ok with his not hunting. But I hurt for
his shoulder pain.

jbuck,
I looked back.
U.C. was last heard from here some 10 days ago, but I thought he said he was going camping.

By Donna (Donna) on Sunday, July 16, 2023 - 09:53 am:

From what I hear, U.C. is enroute U.P. And enjoying
the ride...

And Deb...you know it.....how I wish....

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, July 16, 2023 - 12:54 pm:

Last night we had another bear by our house. We heard yelling around 11 last night and went to the window and saw a bag of garbage in the middle of the street in front of our house. The neighbor was out there yelling at the bear who then ran in our yard. His wife came out with firecrackers so they could clean up the mess because the bear was coming back. It even got up on its back legs. Thankfully the firecrackers scared it away. This is getting ridiculous. But at least it wasn't middle of the day like last time. So see, Donna, you don't have to live behind a state park.
