If you aren’t sure what the three military holidays represent, here is an easy clarification, because we need to know the difference.

Armed Forces Day – Third Saturday in May – is for those still in uniform.

Veteran’s Day – November 11th – is for those who hung up their uniform.

Memorial Day – Last Monday in May – is for those who never made it out of their uniform.
So today, we remember and honor those who died while serving in the U.S. military. Today’s photos are the Veteran’s Plot in Mount Calvary Cemetery – Schoolcraft Township, just outside of Lake Linden. The Memorial stone in the bottom photo says: In Memory Of All Veterans Who Served Their Country. Legion Post 90 – VFW Post 4624

As you enjoy your Memorial Day off, make sure you take time to honor those who gave their all for our freedom. Our video is from the 2022 PBS Memorial Day Concert, featuring the Armed Forces Medley and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark A. Milley’s speech.

In case you’re still voting for Lake Superior as the Best Lake in all three categories, here are the links to do so.

Best Lake
Best Lake for Swimming
Best Lake for Water Sports.

Vote for the best lake in the U.S. once per day until polls close on Monday, June 5 at noon ET.

Amen...Mary the Pasty Queen!

I just watched a program: Arlington-a Call to
Honor. What a program it was. Arlington Cemetery
began as a "Paupers cemetery"...meaning it was
where the poor were buried, who's family (or no
family) couldn't afford to bury them...so they got
placed here.

Robert E Lee was the owner of the property.
Abraham Lincoln asked him to be the leader of the
Union Army. He said NO...went South, and led the
Confederate Army. A Meig (I don't remember the
name..sorry) said to pay him back for him being a
"turncoat", they took his land and started burying
the soldiers from the Union army into it. They
eventually let a few from the Confederate Army
into it.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has an "Unknown"
from each conflict, except for Vietnam. They had a
body in there, but the family found out he was
their fallen, they uninterred him and returned him
to his family. The Tomb remains empty.

They showed a Mom who goes yearly, to put lots of
flowers on her Son. She brings his favorite music,
plays that while she reads the book he WAS reading
before he went to war....

Another plot had bottles of beer. The kid buried
there wasn't old enough to drink, but he was old
enough to die for his country.

John F Kennedy went to visit it one day. He said
"it's such a place of peace and beauty, I could
spend the rest of my life here". Two weeks later,
he was assassinated, and layed to rest in
Arlington. His wife wanted a permanent torch
there. Which they did. The light has gone out
twice, and they relit it each time.

What a wonderful show.

The Smithsonian Channel had it on. If you get
their magazine, you can watch it online.

What great pictures! I was there yesterday
and it was so beautiful and peaceful out
there. Well, unless you count the black
flies. They were not to be ignored. Thanks
for these, Mary. It's beautiful. And thanks
to those who gave their lives to keep us
free.
Happy Memorial Day!!!

By Donna (Donna) on Monday, May 29, 2023 - 10:22 am:

And THANK YOU to all who have served.

Those Memorial Day concerts on PBS are magnificent.
Watched it last night. They ARE phenomenal.

Thanks for all that information, Donna! It
was so interesting. So thanks for sharing it
with us.

Thank you, Mary, for your excellent posts each day!

With honor to our military who died in service, this has to be one of the most moving tributes to them. If this doesn't work you can go to Hillsdale and search on Memorial Day Tribute. Have the tissues ready:

By Donna (Donna) on Monday, May 29, 2023 - 05:07 pm:

You bet Deb...there was so much more. They are in
the stables at "Oh-four hundred", feed the horses,
get them and the Cassion all buffed and
shiny...the horses are picked by color and height.
They have the "Unridden Horse" to honor the
fallen.

You have to have been honorably discharged if you
are out of the service, there are rules for who
gets in..on and on. The soldier has the Bronze
Star or the Purple Heart.

There truly was SO much in that one little hour...

Than you Mary for the clarifications. There are too many people that need the education and many more, it seems, that have no idea what any of it means.

God bless those that gave their "last full measure of devotion" so that life could be breathed into those simple pieces of parchment we call The Declaration of Independence and The Constitution.

Without those willing to defend the meaning of those ideas they would remain just words on paper.
