Located near Manistique in Palms Book State Park, is Michigan’s largest freshwater spring, Kitch-iti-kipi, also known as “The Big Spring” and nicknamed “Mirror of Heaven” by the Ojibwe. We visit there today with a newcomer to the Pasty Cam, Joanne Mills. This natural attraction is beautiful no matter the season, but Joanne’s winter photos are stunning and the stats that accompany the Big Spring are always amazing:

• The teal colored spring is crystal clear and is 40 feet deep and 200 feet across.
• 10,000 gallons of water a minute gush from fissures in the underlying limestone at a constant temperature of 45° F.
• It is home to large lake trout, brown trout and brook trout. (No fishing allowed)
• The overflow of the spring waters enters a rushing stream that winds its way through the surrounding forest and empties into Indian Lake.

A brief history of the beginnings of this beautiful U.P. wonder comes from U.P.Travel.com: John Bellaire, the owner of a five-and-dime store in Manistique, came upon the hidden spring in the 1920’s. He would visit the enchanting waters almost daily. Rather than buy the land for himself, Bellaire wanted everyone to enjoy the spring. So he convinced members of the Palms and Book families who owned the Palms Book Land Company to sell 90 acres surrounding the spring to the State of Michigan for $10. The deed stipulated the land had to be used forever as a public state park. Over the next two decades, the State obtained several more land parcels and the Palms Book State Park now covers nearly 388 acres.

We join Traveling Michigan for a video tour of this breathtaking Big Spring in the winter. The next best thing to actually being there in person.

Excellent set that brings back memories. We used to go there every

year when I was a kid. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

How wonderful to see open water. I'll admit to
being tired of seeing snow everywhere I go. The
video was cool too.

Thanks Joanne! As many times as we've been there it has never been in the Winter. Might be even more beautiful in the snow! Glad they have the raft open then.

Do they allow kayakers to go into the Spring? Have never seen anyone do that, so suspect that isn't allowed.

Wow...how stunning is that! Gorgeous.

Great pics, great to visit in the winter. Marty and
I were the only ones there one time. We didn't take
the raft out, our luck the cable would have broke
when we were right in the middle. lol

YES- Both Tech & NMU won this weekend, more great
hockey ahead!! and yes Jbuck... GO CATS!! :=))

By Iron Range (Ironranger) on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 - 09:03 am:

Sorry jbuck and Uncle Chuck, can't agree with your
sentiments on the hockey. Tech grad here, and all I
can say is, "GO YOUS HUSKIES!"

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 - 09:40 am:

I grew up here and have never been a Tech fan. I was U of M and when I moved, it was UND. But now I'm back and go Huskies.
