Located near Manistique in Palms Book State Park, is Michigan’s largest freshwater spring, Kitch-iti-kipi, also known as “The Big Spring” and nicknamed “Mirror of Heaven” by the Ojibwe. We visit there today with a newcomer to the Pasty Cam, Joanne Mills. This natural attraction is beautiful no matter the season, but Joanne’s winter photos are stunning and the stats that accompany the Big Spring are always amazing:
• The teal colored spring is crystal clear and is 40 feet deep and 200 feet across.
• 10,000 gallons of water a minute gush from fissures in the underlying limestone at a constant temperature of 45° F.
• It is home to large lake trout, brown trout and brook trout. (No fishing allowed)
• The overflow of the spring waters enters a rushing stream that winds its way through the surrounding forest and empties into Indian Lake.
