Debbie Jarve was out and about from Calumet to Houghton this past week and captured a beautiful blue sky with a light cloud cover on 6th street heading into downtown Calumet. There’s just something about those historic buildings on that corner that always catch the eye.
The next scene is the ice just beginning to form up on the Portage Canal, with the third shot just a few days later and look, the ice is completed right across the canal now and you can see the plume of snow on Mont Ripley where they’re making snow to get ready for the ski hill to open.
Then Debbie snaps a shot of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge with the moon shining bright above Hancock and the Houghton waterfront Christmas lights lit up along the dock and in the trees. It’s hard to tell because it looks so bright, but this was early morning when she snapped these last two shots.
Mont Ripley opened for the season this past Saturday and Visit Keweenaw gives us a look at what Opening Day is like. Their hours are Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. They will be closed this week, Monday thru Friday to continue making snow and will open for the season every day, beginning Saturday, December 17th. Check out the Mont Ripley link at the beginning of this paragraph for more information about their hours and season passes.

Beautiful photos and fun video. What a view they have when they're skiing or snowboarding at night. Absolutely gorgeous!

I third Deb’s comments. Nice pix and video…thanks to all who
contributed. I think I could get into snow boarding if I was healthier.

Isn't the first photo taken on Red Jacket Rd. heading onto 5th Street, with the Park HQs on the right and the church (that I can't remember the name of) on the left?

Alex and Donna, I think I could get into snowboarding also if I were younger. But I'd love to go tubing or tobogganing, even at this age. Well, I sure wouldn't wanna climb that hill. Thank goodness there's chairlifts.

The video is great, hat's off to those talented enough to snowboard!! How cool for those young folk to have Ripley so close to campus and not too far away, Mt Bohemia!! I would have definitely tried in back in my college days. As it was, we just took the cafeteria trays in Marquette to Cliff's Ridge I think it was called?? Hey a flask was involved!! :)) Now when I see these videos, Ripley and especially Mt Bohemia, the only thing that comes to mind is, Don't Fall!! If I tried that now... they might find my carcass in the Spring.

One more thing... The Keweenaw County Road Commission is amazing! The manicured roads are a thing of beauty! That top pic with the blue sky in the background is top notch!!

Enjoy those deep blue skies and open water while we can. They'll be gone or scarce all too soon.
Uncle Chuck, you probably remember the invention of the snowboard. I do! It's when the first college students stood up on their makeshift toboggans that were actually those "borrowed" cafeteria trays.
Capt. Paul, I agree; Red Jacket Road.
