Veterans Day always falls on November 11th, celebrating the end of World War I fighting at 11:00 a.m., November 11, 1918 – The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. It’s the day we nationally honor our military veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces in all wars.

The local Veterans in our area are still serving our communities, like these from American Legion Post #90 in Lake Linden. They proudly march onto the field at all Lake Linden-Hubbell Lakes football games, carrying our flag as Honor Guard, standing at attention while the Star Spangled Banner is sung or played by the Lakes Band. They are always given a big round of applause and they deserve it for their prior service, too.

When you meet up with a Veteran make sure you thank them, not only for their service, but for the freedoms we all enjoy because of their service.

Special thanks to Megan Gervais our Lakes photographer. Check out Megan’s webpage here: Megan Gervais Photography

U.P. Veterans are honored several times a year on the Upper Peninsula Honor Flight to Washington, DC. Today’s video is from TV6 during the twentieth honor flight at the end of September. You can see our U.P. Vets as they watched the solemn ceremony of the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown soldier.

Happy Veterans Day!

Thank you to all who have served honorably to protect our liberties and our country. America is free because of your sacrifice. Freedom is not free. May God bless you always!

Thank you to all the veterans who served so
we can enjoy the freedoms we have. You will
never know how very much it is appreciated.
May God bless you all.

A shoutout to all the Veterans…”Thanks for your service!”

By Donna (Donna) on Friday, November 11, 2022 - 11:15 am:

Thank you all Veterans for doing what you
did....thank you, thank you, thank you.

On another note..do the military doing the Unknown
Soldier tomb, have "clickers" (for lack of a better
word) on their shoes??

By Donna (Donna) on Friday, November 11, 2022 - 02:01 pm:

You know....I'm gonna give a shout out to my dear
friend Barbara Jean, who lives in Kalamazoo, who
used to run Michigan's Patriot Guard Riders. SHE
went around to the local funeral homes in her part
of the State, and found the "Unclaimed" remains of
soldiers, found out who they were, and had them
buried appropriately.

She walks on water...those are the kinds of folks
we need so badly today.

Thank you my dear friend. XOXO

Without veterans (living and passed) our Constitution could be just a piece of paper.

It's great to have a day separate from Memorial Day. Giving or saying thanks is nice, but the homelessness and suicide problems are also important. Both are more than 25% higher than in the general population. And the Veterans Administration only helps those disabled for a limited period.

There are several organization that help including those that are disabled. My wife always supported the organization "Disabled American Veterans (DAV)". I have been using the Salvation Army lately but anything other than "Goodwill" works for me.

Here are the U.P. locations for the "DAV":

D. A. (Midwested),
We also support the DAV. They helped my Dad when he came back from WWII. He couldn't thank and praise them enough for what they do for our disabled veterans.

Donna,
Thank you for honoring Barbara Jean. There is a group in Antrim County who does the same thing and they have a special area in the Mancelona cemetery where these men & women are honored.

It took some research but here's the information on the guard's shoes:

The soles have a steel tap affixed to the toe and a steel horseshoe applied to the heel. You can also see that the sole itself is made of leather rather than rubber material.

Thank you JBuck~

That is just wonderful...there are so many
"unclaimed" folks inside funeral homes that people
just don't know about. Thankfully, folks are taking
care of the Veterans.

Cool info on the shoes! Thank you again!

Barb also had me stand in the "Flag Line" for a
deceased soldier. The most humbling time of my
life.
