Debbie Jarve and her grandkids were out turtle hunting at the Calumet Lion’s Park recently and were successful in finding a few out enjoying the sunshine that day. These look to be Painted Turtles, the most widespread native turtle in North America. Did you know that a group of turtles is called a bale? According to the Audobon Naturalist Society, considering that the words bunch and pack are synonyms for bale, it makes sense they’re a bale. When they gather on a log in the sun, they’re actually ramping up their metabolism using the sun’s thermal energy so they can digest their breakfast and generate enough energy to swim around to find dinner. In addition, the sunlight and sitting on warm rocks helps to regulate their body temperature. Thus concludes your turtle lesson for today.
Speaking of lessons, we have one from Dr. Nat who takes us to Pelkie and the geologic mystery of the Limestone Mountain there.

I love turtles. They're so cute. I think my favorite is the sea turtles though. There's just something about them. Very fun pictures. I bet the kids had a great time.
Thanks Dr. Nat. That was very interesting.

Thanks for the tip FJL (Langoman)! Gorgeous!
Those turtles look like the ones that steal our bait while fishing!
D. A. (Midwested) have you been UP all this week? You picked a good time! We need to send you on a roadtrip down the Covered Road to Redridge & Freda to get some pictures!

Great pics here...And I have a friend that grew up in Pelkie. I sent her this vid, and oh the email reply...she was thrilled and what fun memories she got!

Nice pix! Thanks for “snapping” them. And is Dr. Nat stumped? Say

Had to go back and watch Dr. Nat's presentation again. Fascinating subject - also noticed when Capt. Paul panned to the left the rocks were at an angle. And 200 miles to the SE - is that Fayette?
