All kinds of turtles are on the move, trying to find the perfect spot to lay their eggs. E. Neil Harri gets closer to the ground with his camera to snap a few shots of this big ole snapping turtle. He didn’t mention if the turtle snapped at him, while he was snapping the turtle though. Hopefully they both survived the encounter with all fingers and toes intact. Neil reminds us all with these photos, that turtles are moving about, looking for a good egg laying spot. So we need to be cautious on backroads and even on highways. It’s always a good thing to stop and help a turtle across the road if you happen to see one, so it doesn’t get run over or injured. Biggest thing to remember if you do help one to cross the road, is to move it in the direction it was going, because turtles are stubborn and if you turn them around, they may cross the road again to get where they were headed in the first place.

I’ve moved more than a few turtles off the road, but have never been comfortable moving a large snapping turtle like in Neil’s photos. Today’s video shows the best way to move a snapping turtle so you don’t get bit, with a number of other tips on moving them off the road.

That's really a cool vid. Thanks Mary!

My friend and I watched a turtle lay eggs up at
Lake Bailey a few decades ago. What a miracle~

That was a cool video, though I don't think
I'd touch a snapper lol. I love turtles,
and especially sea turtles. It is my wish
to be sitting on the beach in Alabama, or
wherever, and see the babies march out to
sea.

Thanks for sharing.

Fierce! I helped one across the road by picking it
up by the sides...bad idea. Like lightning, it's
head and neck shot out, reached around and
snapped...missed me by millimeters.

I think that guy had to be using a stunt turtle or a stand-in turtle.

Couldn’t have been a real celebrity turtle. Too well behaved.

I was thinking that turtle must have been dizzy from all the times it was taken back & forth across the road!

Like Donna, we have also seen turtles laying eggs a couple times. But it didn't take long for a raccoon, etc, to find the nest and eat the eggs.

By Donna (Donna) on Sunday, May 29, 2022 - 09:49 am:

Turtles are the most ancient of all living
reptiles. They first appeared on earth some 200
million years ago and have remained relatively
unchanged. Their survival is most likely due to one
of nature’s most successful designs – the shell.
The shell is actually fused bone, consisting of the
rib cage and spinal cord.

(I had to look)

Q: Why did the turtle cross the road?

A: He doesn't know. All of a sudden he found himself on the other side.
