There’s a kind of quiet on the country roads here UP North, that makes for a relaxing, often calming time just cruising along checking out the country side. Beth Jukuri’s latest snapshots take us on a virtual ride today. She has critter friends along the way, which always put a smile on my face to see when she captures them along her travels. This time we get a view of dinnertime for the Scottish Highlander family of livestock. With all that hair these highlanders have, it must keep them warmer in the wintertime.

The second photo is a unique one. Those turkeys are all riled up and even taking flight. I recall not that long ago when it was a rarity to see wild turkeys around the Keweenaw. They have increased in numbers since then and are a common sight, sometimes even a nuisance if they discover your bird feeders.

Beth shares a video from earlier in December, of a flock of turkeys crossing the road in front of her. Turn up the volume and you’ll hear them “talking” as they try to figure out which way to go.

Way cool...when I lived in Baraga and fed the
critters, the turkeys would make a "wheat, wheat,
wheat" sound when the girls would eat. The male
stood guard. When I threw out seed for them, I'd
yell "Turkey Birds, Turkey Birds, Wheat, Wheat,
Wheat"...and they'd come running in...then when
they went to leave, I'd "Gobble, Gobble" and the
male ALWAYS answered! He'd "GOBBLE, GOBBLE" back!

But the winter...oh how sad to see their little
feet all iced up, and standing on one leg to
eat...but they make it!~

I'm not sure what's wrong with me lately. My immediate reaction to the "Turkeys in Flight" photo was that someone was re-enacting a scene from the old TV show, WKRP In Cincinnati.

"They're hitting the ground like bags of wet cement"!!! LOL, D. A. (Midwested)

When i see the picture of the shed i think of how well it's made and how hard the people worked to make that shed - it's 'just' a shed but still square after all these years. Pride in workmanship!

jbuck,
"As God is my witness, I swear I thought turkeys could fly."

I enjoy pictures of turkeys also. I guess I
should just say I love nature pictures
because I'm always commenting about how much
I like the them.

In the video, those birds need to make up
their minds which way to go, lol. Fun to
watch.
