Stacey Flood was exploring around Eagle Harbor recently and saw several different ice views of Lake Superior along the way. I like the ones with the big float pieces of ice. They don’t look thick enough to support a person and reminds me of the stories of folks out ice fishing when the ice starts breaking away and they are out on Superior adrift. No thank you, pretty, but I’ll stay off the ice on the Big Lake.
Check out the deer in Stacey’s photo. They’re actually looking pretty healthy and that’s a good thing this time of year. It won’t be long until the snow is gone and these critters will be finding their own food in the woods again.
Then there is that fungi in the bottom shot. So colorful and pretty. I wonder if it’s useful, as in edible or medicinal for any purpose. It sure is an interesting specimen.
Our video today, comes to us from videographer, Kristin Ojaniemi, with views over and around the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge in Copper Harbor. The Lodge has not been open in the winter, in over a decade, but is open this year, with 10km of groomed cross country ski trails and 2 miles of snowshoe trails that are all open to the public. If you’re looking for a great winter vacation spot, this is it. They have a restaurant, coffee shop and log cabins for lodging. Don’t forget to pack your snowshoes and skis!

Thanks Stacey!! In looking at your Superior photos it reminds me there are reports that the lakes will back off of their record high water levels this year. A little moderation will probably be good for everyone. And yes, the deer do look like they have come thru the Winter well so far.
The video makes me wish we had gotten to stay at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge back when we could. Lost opportunity!
