Nancy Haun, our official Pasty railfan, captured a shot, plus a video of the CN train off in the distance and several deer on the tracks, with the snow coming down pretty good. Nancy’s narrative of the deer/CN train challenge describes the scene quite well:
The weather reports of many inches of snow, below zero temps and high winds caused me to question if I should even go to L'Anse and take video of the Canadian National today. Of course I went-there was no question! I got up early and headed to L'Anse so I wouldn't miss the Canadian National leaving since they had tied down for the night and the time frame of their departure was earlier than normal. I had waited about 40 minutes and heard the horn sound and got in position-the first thing I saw was the deer on the tracks. I see them fairly often but this many, crossing this many times, was very Kool. I saw them cross a number of times before the train started up the Hill and I thought surely the deer would stay off the rails once the train was in motion-nope they played chicken as the CN made it's way to where I was waiting! So it was a good day after all. I got some good video of the deer and Canadian National and no deer were injured in the filming of this video!
The second and third shots are bonus scenes of CN 5413, because, who doesn’t like train shots, right?
Nancy’s video is almost 10 minutes, so if you don’t have time to watch the entire video, at least watch the first four minutes to see those crazy deer running back and forth on the tracks. It’s a long train, too, so if you do have the time, it’s a neat one to watch and hear the whistle, along with the clackety-clack on the rails.
