Light Pillars are a more uncommon weather phenomenon here in the Keweenaw, in fact today’s photographer, Isaac Diener said it was his first time witnessing it and thought it looked like Northern Lights at first. He snapped these photos around 4:00 a.m. and said it also reminded him of the “bat signal”.
I had to check out how this phenomenon comes about and found that they are formed by ice crystals reflecting in the man-made light of very cold air. Interesting and so neat to see! Isaac has some other interesting photos on his Facebook page, you can check them out here: Isaac Diener – Photographer.
Today’s video is going to explain the science behind five other kinds of optical weather phenomena involving sunlight in the atmosphere. The results can be spectacular.
