NOTE: Most of the color has peaked and is gone, especially with the winds, rain and snow we’ve had the past few days. Stay tuned for the early October snow pictures this week and then we may go back to fall photos that folks snapped a few weeks back. The beautiful colors never last long enough, but we can enjoy them longer through photos here on the Pasty Cam.

Kevin Henriksen has been coming for a visit to the U.P. during the Autumn season for a number of years, only this year he was unable to get out to Isle Royale, so he took in more of the Keweenaw colors instead. His “road” shots are classic examples of the drive to Lac La Belle and Copper Harbor, with the colorful leaves guiding your way. Kevin’s shot of Haven Falls in Lac La Belle is a beauty too. And then we get to his last photo and oh, oh... here starts the early October snow, mixing in with our fall colors. The best thing about snow in October here in the Copper Country, is that it doesn’t last long and is just a reminder that we better get set, because winter isn’t far off.

We’re taking a drive from Gay, MI to Lac La Belle in today’s video from takemytripdotcom. Enjoy the ride and the view!

Fantastic pics! Great video... wish I had a nickel
for every time I took that route! Seems like I've
done it at that speed as well... depending on the
vehicle I was in! lol

Video "Drive from Gay to Lac La Belle":
Hold on to yer hat, that's a drive at breakneck speed!
At least you can throttle it down to 0.25 speed (of course that would make it 28min + 15 sec.) and perhaps 1080P (HD),

Incidentally, there was a glimpse of the Gay School …
Gay School
What's the status of that project?
I'd like to see more about that; did I miss something?
I wish we could read the sign.

Looks like the Smith Fisheries Road was in pretty good shape. If you were quick, you can see there was a road grader coming towards us.

Here is a photo of the school sign in Gay that I took in 2016. I had to greatly crop and compress the image quite a bit to meet the Pasty file size limit of 100Kb so I hope you can still read the sign. Maybe we could lobby for this size limit, that was established during the days of dial up modems, to be increased?

The pictures are fantastic and the drive made
me dizzy lol. But I loved every minute of it.
Thanks for taking us along.

Wonderful, thanks for that!
Now if someone's just got some information on the status of the school restoration project …

Beautiful Autumn time!

I've driven by Haven Falls several times on the Wing, but never noticed them. That's one of the downfalls of riding a motorcycle, eyes on the road most of the time.

Thanks, that looks purty complete to me!

Considering what they started with. it looks like they did a great job with it, and much faster than the usual glacial speed of such projects!

From The Keweenaw County Historical Society,
(click →) The Historic School at Gay, quoted here in part:

Quote:

"In 2009 the Keweenaw County Historical Society took over the property and began extensive repair and restoration work. The school is now a museum telling the story of the town of Gay and the impact of the Mohawk and Wolverine Copper Mining Companies' mills on the town of Gay and the environment. It also tells the story of commercial lumber and fishing in the area."

So the great repair and restoration project began in 2009, but they don't say when it was completed.
