It’s nice that the whole U.P. doesn’t burst into color at the same time, that it turns in different areas sooner and some later. I think the proximity to Lake Superior and water, has something to do with it, but I don’t know the logistics of it all. What I do know, is that the colors are usually spectacular and give your senses that “OOH, AHH” feeling of contentment at seeing nature in all it’s glory.

Joe Kirkish captured some of the beauty on a drive out near Misery Bay, west of Toivola. It must have be hard to concentrate on the road, when your eyes keep getting drawn to the hues on the side of the road. I’m guessing Joe must have made many stops along his journey to capture these photos.

Our “Deep Breath” of Fall comes to us from Pure Michigan. Instead of stopping to smell the roses this time of year, we need to stop to take in the vibrant colors and then take a breath of Pure Michigan's autumn air.

Beautiful pics & video!! Saw it all for myself
last week, great trip!! The whole Keweenaw was a
buzz with people and it was packed!! Calumet/
Copper Harbor was extremely busy and out at High
Rock Bay, I think I saw 8 separate camp sites. We
passed numerous trucks and cars headed there and
back. Most of the hotel/motels were full from
Munising/Escanaba all the way North. Looking
forward to another trip possibly in November.

Glad you had a great trip U.C. Sorry I couldn't make it too.

I remember the road to Misery Bay. There's a small lake or pond very close to the south side of the road that caught my eye one Summer due to the seemingly endless shades of green. Quite the contrast to the Autumn colors! I wonder just what is it about Autumn that fascinates us. I think maybe that it lasts for such a short period compared to "greens" of Spring and Summer. It's no accident that the human eye can differentiate far more shades of green than all the other color spectrum, more than a million shades of green. Maybe it's because we had to do so in order to survive for the thousands of years of evolution in order to locate both food and foe?

I really like Professor Kirkish's photos along the Misery Bay road. I still must address him appropriately since the days at MTU when I took some of his classes, in particular the Movie Appreciation class. In particular I remember the introduction to "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge", very compelling.

Also, since Donna brought up agate hunting yesterday, I cannot resist reposting my favorite Misery Bay photo. I call it "Mooning Minnesota".

I am so loving these autumn pictures. I do believe that the leaves are so much more brilliant this year than they have been in the past. And they seem to be hanging on a lot longer too. I'm especially grateful for that because, here in Minnesota, the wind usually takes care of them before we get the chance to really enjoy them. This year there's not as much rain and wind and they're just so beautiful. Thanks to all who are taking these gorgeous photos for us to enjoy and to Mary for her great descriptions.
