Sunset Bay used to be huge..but the owner passed
on and his kids sold off most of the land. There
used to be an old tin building you'd drop your
dollar in, walk a trail to mounds of agate
picking territory. It used to be one fabulous
place to pick!
On another note...I went in on one Easter Sunday,
decades ago to pick agates. The gate was open and
unlocked, so I drove in. When the caretaker
left...he left and locked the gate. Then later, I
went to leave and was locked in! THANKFULLY...I
had one of them 4 pronged tire irons that had a
screwdriver on one of them. Took awhile, but I
got it unscrewed, opened the gate, drove out,
shut the gate and put the screws back in and
drove home. I called the Keweenaw County
Sheriff's dept to report a "breakout"! The cop
was like "wait....what?? And I repeated the
story and he dropped the phone, he was laughing
so hard! He called me later to let me know he
stopped in down there and let the caretaker know
what happened. He fixed it too...the gate I
unscrewed was wood. He replaced it with
metal....no more unscrewing easy enough! LOL....I
got some beauties that day...that is the best
agate spot on the planet....and it all says "NO
TRESPASSING/PRIVATE PROPERTY"....for those folks
that use a 3 floor "camp" for a week or so a
year!

Man, we hope to get up there in a few weeks. Just not certain about the virus and whether the Keweenaw will want us, being from out of state..... :/

That is quite a large wash up of new beach at Sunset. I'm surprised no agates were found. I drove down there two years ago on the last camping day of the season. I was initially worried because it's quite a winding road but there were several very large rigs there.
Capt. Paul, I've been thinking the same thing. I'd be glad to get tested as a condition for entry.

These pictures are great. I especially like
the last two.
