I swear Jean Dessellier must sit outside in the trees, because she always manages to get some dandy close-up shots of the birds that visit her feeders. We start off with a Ruby-throated Hummingbird she captured. They’ve just started appearing back here in the Copper Country the last week or two and they’re a welcome sight for sure.
The next shot is a Rose-breasted Grosbeak, which she said was the first one at her feeder this year. They’ve just started coming around again in the last week or so at our feeders, too. Such pretty birds with that distinct red patch on the breast, against the white and black, it makes it look like he’s dressed up with an ascot around his neck.
Jean’s last visitor is a Purple Finch. I have never understood why it’s called a purple finch, when it is in fact red colored. Even one of the bird books we have, classifies them as “red finches” for the category, but then lists it as a Purple Finch. I wonder if there’s a story to the color name.
We jump up in size for the bird in today’s video. Bob Gilreath was able to record a male Pileated Woodpecker. Turn up your speakers so you can hear him hammering away at the tree. I like how he tosses pieces of the tree out of the way, as he’s pecking away.

These are quite spectacular pictures. I can
never seem to get that close. I'm too old to
climb trees. Good for you.
