The dredging continues out at Big Traverse, clearing the stamp sand that’s been clogging the channel in the Traverse River. From what I understand, the folks doing the dredging work 24/7, moving this gray, small rock like sand. Barbara Bouwkamp snapped the first shot a week ago and it shows the channel between the irons there just about clear and the beach on the left, somewhat level with the pier.
For comparison of how much has been accomplished so far, the second photo is one I took back on July 25th, two weeks before Barbara’a photo was taken. Check out how much stamp sand was still in the channel in that photo, even after the dredging had been going on for weeks already. And look at the pile up over the pier and on the beach... loads and loads of it has been moved. A massive job to keep the channel from becoming blocked and flooding the camps and homes along the river. All this is another example of the power of Lake Superior, when the waves are so strong that they push this sand further and further up the beach, until it piles over the pier and into the channel there.
Today’s video published by “In The Keweenaw” gives us all a look at the last day of July here in the Keweenaw.

Beautifully calm morning for a great Portage sunrise.
Good to see the progress in clearing of the Big Traverse River channel. I see they've added a pier or break water extension to the east side of the channel. Looks like the height needs to be raised now.
They estimate 15 million yards of sand needs to be removed/relocated. That's almost 1 million semitrailer loads. That A LOT of trips. I predict no one will come up with enough money to do all that.
I was waiting for that drone to drop down to Roy's Bakery for a breakfast pasty.

Wow, that shot overhead really shows the impact D.A.! Thanks!
Haven't heard anything further about the projects to use the stamps sands.

Very interesting. I did not know they were doing this. I didn't get there this time UP because we stayed in Twin Lakes. I've always thought it weird that there's stamp sand on the left side of Big Traverse and the nicer Lake Superior sand on the right side where we always go swimming.
