The Cottonwood trees have been busy the last few weeks, blowing cotton-like seeds around in the air and you may have noticed a dusty, greenish coating on your car and other surfaces lately, too. That’s pollen from the trees settling all over the place, including the shoreline of Lake Superior. Joe Kirkish captured several photos of the pollen floating, gathered on the edges of the Big Lake. Joe’s first shot was taken in front of his cottage near Copper Harbor. The second photo was at McLain State Park.
Seems like there’s been a lot of pollen collecting in Superior this year. I was out at the Schoolcraft Township Park in Big Traverse last week with my grandchildren and there was pollen floating on the shoreline there, too.
Today’s video was published by Discovery and talks about how and why a cedar tree virtually explodes with pollen when someone shakes it. So that’s what causes those of us with allergies, to be sneezing and having itchy eyes this time of year.
