Back in December, we took a look at the full moon and today we're back staring at the moonlit sky in Fredric W. Koski's photo of the winter moon. Very scenic how the moon is glowing in a star-like display, over an icy Superior shoreline. I'm guessing it's a full moon or close to it.
Frederic's second photo looks like he may have been circling it close-up. I think I can see the "man in the moon" peeking out of one of those craters! Here again, I'm guessing that this was taken in the morning hours and because of that, I'm confused as to whether it's a first quarter moon or a third quarter moon? Hopefully some of you astronomers out there, will be able to set me straight on the matter.

Cool! The moon is quite the wonder, isn't it? I love looking at it when it is so brilliant in the sky!

You scared me for a minute, Mary!!! When I quickly glanced at the first photo today I thought "good grief, is it the end of the month already??"
Gorgeous! Wondering if the U.S. flag the astronauts put up there in 1969 is still in the same condition it was at that time?

I've been a casual watcher for quite a while, but couldn't resist pointing out that the second foto is a waxing gibbous moon, preparing for full moon next wednesday

This note is a day late: Memories 1954-55: I lived in Hubbell and attended Tamarack School on the hill 2 & 3 grades. During the spring when the snow started to melt and run down the road next to the school we would make snow dams on the edge of the road to stop the water, of course the water would be stopped only for minutes, we got all wet and had fun. We played Cowboys and Indians games below on the hills or should I say cliffs of Hungarian Falls. We also played in the water below the falls. We built a lean-to for shelter and I left my dads hatchet there one night and a porcupine had eaten the wood handle because of the body salt from our hands on it. We would sneak potatoes and matches from home, build a fire then put the potatoes in the fire. When the potatoes were all total black we would cut them open with our jack knifes and eat them. Between the different elevated train tracks ponds would developed from the retain rain water in some of the areas, the bigger boys would make rafts out of 4 to 5 old ties nailed together. We would use the rafts when the big guys were not in the area and get our feet all wet because the rafts would sink about two inches below the surface of the water. In Hubbell we lived next to and on the west side of the train tracks going north coming from the stamping Mill. Our house had a long gravel driveway parallel with the tracks and there were no homes on the east side of the tracks with the lake beyond. While we lived in this house there was a big rain storm and the Hungarian Falls Dam failed and which in turn flowed to the lake. This flood flowed to our yard and formed a “Y” around our house and wash out the earth under the train tracks. We ended up having two deep trenches thru our yard, but the flood did not touch our house. I have many other warm thought of my child hood adventures in the Hubbell / Tamarack area but will close now. I give a Thank You to the Hubbell Community for helping me develop into a person that has contributed to Our World and has a family that God is blessing every day. I want to thank Pasty.com also, a friend led me to this web site about six years ago and I have enjoyed every day since. For the short time that I lived in Hubbell, I will always have very found memories.

Charles, sounds like you have fond memories of your childhood in the UP, like so many of us do. It's a wonderful place to have grown up in, just like it still is after all these years.
