Gitche Gumee is an Ojibwe word that means “Great Sea” or “Big Sea” and is their name for Lake Superior. Definitely a fitting name, as Lake Superior is the largest and deepest of the Great Lakes. We join 906 Images for a look at the ice that’s accumulated along Superior’s shoreline in the Marquette area and Presque Isle Park. Some pretty impressive ice chunks that look like they’ve broken UP and piled on top of other ice along the shores. Now that we’re into March, the ice will be shifting around much more as it breaks apart with the warming temperatures and before you know it, will go out into the big lake a melt away. Yes, I’m looking forward to spring!
906 Images also shares a video with us, that was recorded toward the end of February, so the ice cover may have changed on the Blackrocks since then. He walked out during a snowstorm, to the ice-covered jump spot at the Blackrocks, where all the folks jump in the summer at Presque Isle Park. Don’t worry, he wears a really good pair of ice cleats and he knows this area well, where all the valleys and such are, so he’s very careful.

Hi My favorite is the second photo (Icy Superior).
Glad to know that the photographer filming the video had ice cleats. I was worried even as I enjoyed the shots.
