For several months now, Gladys Collins said she’s been in awe of this male Cardinal, as he and his girlfriend have been visiting her bird feeder regularly, in West Ishpeming. That’s one bird that we have not seen at our feeders here in the Keweenaw. What a thrill that must be to have this brightly colored bird coming to eat all the time like that.

Bob Gilreath has what he calls a resident female Pileated Woodpecker as a regular visitor there at his Hubbell home. That’s another bird that we have around, but it’s never stopped by for a bite to eat at our feeders. Again, so fun to have it coming on a regular basis like that.

The last two photos are a couple of neat shots from Bob...a beautiful morning scene, complete with icicles hanging from the roof. The bottom photo was snapped when we had the full moon a week or so ago…no flash just the moonlight to take this photo. Note the moonlit shadow of the tall tree in the middle of the yard. Pretty amazing that it was that bright out at night.

Bob also captured a video of the Pileated Woodpecker at his feeding station. He said that big bird can chew up a suet cake in no time flat.

Beautiful birds. We haven't seen
birds in days. We haven't had any
snow for days, and that's when
they come. Really nice pictures.

Beautiful pics...Glady are you lucky with that
Cardinal...I saw a female twice when I lived in
Baraga...never a male tho...I had woodpeckers
galore down there. I swear I fed every woodpecker
in Baraga County....I had a log feeder about 2 1/2
feet long, with 4 holes drilled through it and it
hung by a hook on one end. I made suet, melting a
pound of lard, a small jar of peanut butter and a
bunch of sunflower seed, then I'd pour it in a
bread pan and stick it in the fridge...I'd go
through at least one a week...the deer liked it
too.

I LOVE that sun room...that's just gorgeous. The
pic w/the full moon is stunning. Good stuff!

Love all the photos, favorite, moonlit scene. I like
Donna's recipe for suet.

Thank You, everybody who submits photos and to Mary,
who puts it all together'

Love all the photos, the moonlit one is my favorite.
Would just like to say, 'Thank You', to all the
people who send in photos and to Mary, for putting
it all together for us to enjoy

Nice set! I never see Cardinals in the winter.
I always thought they flew South.
And Donna… throw in some dried fruit and
you’ve got yourself a fruitcake.

Mickillmouse…it’s nice to see you chiming
in again. I’ve tried looking up your name,
but it keeps leading me to Disney World.
Were you born in Florida? :-)

By Mickillmouse (Mickillmouse) on Saturday, December 28, 2024 - 04:18 pm:

Alex, Thank You, for the kind words. It has been a
while since I was posting.

LOL, I have been to Florida, did not like it. My mom
lived in Florida location as a little girl.

We have no regrets moving here from Auburn Hills.
Bill fell in live with the area when he started
coming up here with me, to see my mom.

Alex...lol...ain't it the truth...that is close to
fruitcake~ lol

And Mick...no slicing it...I'd wear throw away
latex gloves to fill my log feeder. I'd imagine if
you were putting it into one of them suet feeders,
you could slice it if it was frozen maybe? It's a
bit gooey...
