The Covered Road is by no means a main thoroughfare here in the Keweenaw, it’s actually county road S63. But if you mention that name to anyone who has grown UP here, they will know exactly where you’re talking about. It is also referred to as the Covered Drive and it takes you from Houghton, out toward Freda, where you’ll find the Redridge Dam and Lake Superior, too. Deb Simons and her hubby, Ron, recently took a drive that way to check out the fall colors and they found plenty of them around every bend in the road. Fall is the prime time to find the beauty on the Covered Road, but really, any time of year it’s a great drive with the tall trees lining the road, creating a canopy overhead.

We enjoy another Visit Keweenaw Crossing Place video today. This one featuring the Keweenaw Brewing Company, which is an icon in the Michigan craft beer community. Dr. Emily Geiger, KBC’s microbiologist, gives us a unique insight into how this magical beer is influenced by the community.

Deb… you and Donna sure do get around.
Nice set!
And I loved the video. What a great job
and Dr. Geiger definitely loves what
she does and the Keweenaw and it shows.
She’s none the Bud-Wiser.

I was wishing there would have
been more color. There was a lot
of green still. And yet the color
was there too. It doesn't matter.
Like Mary said, there's no bad
time to go there. I just love that
drive. I have since I was a little
girl, and we'd drive out to Freda
to see relatives.

Thanks Deb! Every year i look forward to pictures of the Covered Road! Beautiful!!

The vid was a shock - because Emily Geiger is the adopted daughter of my friend and prior co-worker, who is also a Wildcat!! I have never met her but her Dad must have instilled a love of the UP at an early age! So cool to see her and hear what she is doing!

Thanks for the reminder, Mary.
They're still #5.

Beautiful pics Deb & Ron. I drove out to Freda one
time and somehow, I missed or could not find the
"Covered Road". I'll have to try again one day. Is
it better than US 41, the last 11 miles to Copper
Harbor, passing by Lake Medora???

Lastly, I think Alex and I should be the official
downstate taste testers/promoters for the Keweenaw
Brewing Company, just to be certain the quality of
the product is still top notch by the time it gets
to S.E. Michigan. Both Alex and I have years of
experience of being in the Keweenaw and we would
certainly be the perfect ambassadors to promote
this fine product in the Detroit Metro area-eh!!

I don't know Alex, think anybody's buying my
pitch?? lol prolly not. :=))

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, October 21, 2024 - 10:58 pm:

Ya know, Chuck. I was weighing
that exact same question. I love
the US 41 drive and have some
excellent pictures from that
drive. I especially love how the
dark pavement seems to bring out
the color of the leaves. They're
both excellent drives.

You can have all of my beer, too.
I can't stand the stuff.

By Alex - UP-Goldwinger (Alex) on Monday, October 21, 2024 - 11:01 pm:

Well said, UC. I’m buying the first round.

By Donna (Donna) on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 - 10:29 am:

We did the covered drive too...it really wasn't as
wonderful...lots of yellow and lots of green.

UC...you can have my beer too....lol.

And Jbuck...how cool is that! You know the young
lady brewing...and she sure knows what she's
doing...that is too cool!!

Thanks for the reminder to vote Mary! I'd never
remember on my own. lol
