Laurie Bashaw and her hubby Ed, recently went on the sunset cruise out of Copper Harbor on the Isle Royale Queen 4. It was a 2 ½ hour ride and Lake Superior was pretty calm that evening. She said the highlights were of course the lighthouses, from Copper Harbor to the two on Manitou Island... the Manitou Island Light Station and Gull Rock Lighthouse. Laurie was amazed at how big Manitou Island was and they wondered how many agates and Yooperlites were on the shore. And of course spotting the freighter out in the shipping lanes was a treat, too. I’m not sure which one it is, maybe one of our “resident boat nerds” can identify it.

We go on a scenic tour of the Keweenaw with Kevin’s Guitar Ukulele | Cycling Travel. Plenty of beautiful scenery and I like that the music doesn’t drown out the sounds of the Big Lake. Peaceful and calming, almost feels like you’re there, hearing the waves lapping on the shoreline. Even a little waterfall action and sounds at Jacob’s Falls and Eagle River Falls.

These pictures are wonderful. Brings back some good
memories when we did the Sunset Cruise few years
back. It was amazing. Chased down the Missabe Miner
out in the shipping lanes. Highly recommend it.

Great pictures. We haven't done
this tour, but we took the boat
tour out to the Copper Harbor
lighthouse. That was very cool
too. We loved it and even our two
youngest boys enjoyed it. I think
we're going to have to do this one
now, though.

How cool....Decades ago, I worked at the Mariner
North (the one that burned down), and one night,
Kauppi rented the boat for us Harbor "Rats".
And donated beer, etc....whatta ride.

From the Keweenaw Reporter:

Pasty Fest Includes Nine Businesses in the Pasty
Bake Off

Pasty Fest returns to 5th Street in Calumet
tomorrow. Several popular activities will surely
draw a crowd, such as the poetry slam tonight, or
the pasty eating competition at 3 pm. But one of
the festival’s most popular competitions asks the
whole community for their input. The Pasty Fest
Bake Off. This year’s kits will include samples of
pastys from Jim’s Pizza Calumet, Jen’s Bakery, the
Mohawk Superette, Krupps Mini Mart, Bosio Biscuit
Company, Griffin Family Café, and Catering,
Sheyboygen Pasty Co, The Matador, and East Fork
Company. The Pasty Fest bake-off boxes will become
available at noon. Typically those interested in
judging this year’s pasty competition will begin
to line up early at 5th and Scott. Boxes this year
will cost 40 dollars. Those interested in
participating in the Pasty Fest bake-off or other
activities at Pasty Fest tomorrow can find more
details here.

(the details:)
Like the sword in the stone, pulling the winning
toothpick out of your Pasty Bake Off kit DOES make
you feel like the chosen one!
You be the Judge during the Pasty Bake Off - but
remember, these $40 kits are CASH only and first-
come-first-serve. Arrive early and purchase at the
pasty sales area. Taste the pasty rainbow from 9
competitors; Jim's Pizza Calumet, Jen's Bakery,
Mohawk Superette, Krupp's Mini Mart, Bosio Biscuit
Company, Griffin Family Cafe & Catering Sheboygan
Pasty Co., The Matador and East Fork Pasty
Company.
Bake off winners will be announced at 1:30pm in
the pasty area, and again at 3PM before the Pasty
Eating Competition.

Doesn’t get much better than that!
Pleasant pix and the video brought
tears to my eyes as I viewed many
spots that I used to walk back in
better days and a better time.
Thanks to the contributors for
the very good memories.

That ship is US Steel Great Lakes Fleet and it could
be the Anderson. Clark, or Callaway, all sister
ships, all originally built in 1952.

By Richard Anderson (Richardt) on Saturday, August 17, 2024 - 12:39 pm:

I don't know if the Clarke or Calloway are still
sailing. So, this photo is likely the Arthur
Anderson.

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Sunday, August 18, 2024 - 12:34 am:

Nice pics and video! Well, the freighter is definitely not 1000 footer,
and it does look like the Anderson.

You beat me to it Richard. I can say that all three boats are still in service. Below is the Arthur M. Anderson

I was lucky enough to get a ride to Manitou Island back in 2016. It was a bit of a hike for me from the boat dock to the lighthouse but it was well worth it. It's where I met Bob Barron as he was showing some of his polished agates. Some were the size of a tennis ball. He said he got the big ones by scuba diving with a rock hammer off the coast of the Island. He would ride over on a personal watercraft but this time he was with our crew.

Bob was the diver that found the 19 ton float copper now at the A.E. Seaman Museum.

Those agates are sooooooooo beautiful!! I can't get
to the shore to pick anymore....Labor Day was a
definite agate picking day with my dear
friend....haven't been able to in years....but back
in the day...We NEVER found anything this
gorgeous!!

By D. A. (Midwested) on Sunday, August 18, 2024 - 05:19 pm:

Donna,

Here is a link to many more photos from Manitou Island and a lot more. I took a 4 day seminar put on by a group of geologists from MTU. We traveled by boat, bus & foot. We traveled all over the Keweenaw while examining different geologic periods - Volcanism, Faulting, Sandstone and Man's Mining Impacts. I think they no longer offer this.

2016 MTU Geoheritage Tour

Their old website still is up and has many interesting things.
MTU Geoheritage Website

I wish someone would organize a similar tour for Keweenaw history.
