Jeff & Chris Dennis had to go to Saint Ignace recently, for his work. When the work was done, they hopped on the next ferry over to Mackinac Island and once there, they headed right over to the Great Turtle Kayak Tours place. There they got hooked up with kayaks to rent and a guide to help them navigate through the boat traffic in the harbor and off they went. Jeff said the guide took them all the way out to the Red Bell Buoy, so they’re now members of the “Red Bell Buoy Club”. Now before you ask, I’m not sure that’s a real club, but either way, Jeff and Chris are now members! He did say that the guide told them it’s rare that he takes groups out that far.

They also posed with a cruise ship in the background, paddled by Arch Rock and the marina in front of Fort Mackinac. Jeff said that it was hard to take photos with everything going on, especially near town as there was a lot of boat traffic and of course that made some good size waves to paddle through. Sorry, no photos of Fritz on this adventure, he didn’t make the trip and Jeff said they missed having him along.

Chris recorded a short video as they were coming to the end of their paddle when they were getting ready to head back to shore near the ferry docks and hotels on the waterfront. I may have to put this on my “bucket list”!

Quite an impressive buoy.

Way cool! They're so brave. I
would have to stick to the marina
there, where the waters were calm.

Poor Fritz, lol.

Hi
Hmm, it looks like something I should check into as
a way to see the sights. I've rented a bike and
pedaled around the island lots of times, but as long
as it was calm I think a kayak would suit me better.

DebS, I don't know that the harbor itself would be
all that calm what with wakes from the ferries & any
other boats. My aunt once got drenched by a fast-
moving ferry while riding on the bow of my grandpa's
boat.

Very nice outing.

But that red buoy I think is properly called a lighted day beacon. Red buoys are also called NUN buoys, have a triangle shape and an even number. Green buoys are called CAN Buoys, have a cylindrical shape and have an odd number. When returning to port or heading "upstream" remember to keep the red buoy on your right. Red Right Returning.

Buoys
