Melanie Hakala Rossi and friends took advantage of one of the sunny days lately and took a hike in the Jacobsville area, to the shores of Lake Superior. She said in the sunshine, with no wind, it was in the low 40’s but felt warm enough after hiking there to be in shirtsleeves. One of the gals even took off her boots and socks and walked in the water and she said her feet weren’t even cold afterwards. Now that’s Yooper Sisu right there. You can see there’s some ice on the shoreline, but not much for this time of year. Those last two photos have me puzzled. I know there is a lot of sandstone out that way, but is the gray/blue color ice on the sandstone or water reflections or a different kind of stone? Chime in if you have any ideas. Maybe Dr. Nat or Capt. Paul will see this and give us a lesson on what it is.

In the meantime, enjoy the sunset out at Little Traverse Bay, with Jeff Dennis. Looks like there was a bit of chunky water sloshing around that evening, too.

I'm still shivering after seeing the barefoot wading pic . . . that's sisu X 2 at least!

Nice pictures! So strange to see
so much beach in early March. But
I'm not complaining. Video was
good too.

No clue on the rock? But the bottom one looks
underwater?

A beautiful, yet odd looking set of pix. It almost
looks like summer, but it's winter and people are
wading in ice-cold water.

Hi
My guess would be ice for the blue-gray patterns
in the bottom two pictures. I agree the very
bottom one appears to have water over the pattern.

In the past, Lake Superior was too cold for me
even in the summer. The exception was a shallow
bay with a sandy bottom by the Bay Furnace
campground near Munising. But with the weird
weather, maybe it'll be similar to Lake Huron. I
have swum in that (near Cheboygan) since I was a
kid.

I agree Kathyrn, it's beautiful and most likely frozen water tracking the patterns in the wave washed sand and the wave eroded sandstone.

I first thought, why does the sunset look that way when viewed from the east Keweenaw shoreline. I've always reflexively preferred the west shoreline since I much prefer to chase the 'sets rather than the 'rises. But I just realized, after referencing a map, there is an area at the end of Louis Point Rd, on the south side of the Tombolo that views 1 to 2 miles of open water to the southwest. Tombolos are one of my favorite geological formations, I should have realized this gem earlier.

And oh yea...

Melanie's friend in CRAZY!

It WAS a beauty day tho so maybe I'm simply jealous?
