Happy New Year from all of us here at Pasty Central

We start the new year with a little history about the Italian Hall Tragedy. Michelle Roy Nelson and her hubby, Jim were in Calumet at the Italian Hall Tragedy Memorial on Christmas Eve, for the 110th Anniversary ceremony. She said the luminaries were lit, but they ended up leaving after an hour or so. It had said at dusk for the ceremony and it was dark when they left. Michelle and Jim like to go for the ceremony, because two of Jim’s great aunts died in the tragedy, you can see the sisters names together in the bottom photo. Michelle told me that Jim’s great grandfather and his siblings were all there at the party, six of them. Four of them made it out alive, but Elisina - 6 years old and Sandra – 4 years old, did not. I cannot imagine how the parents must have felt. This is such a beautiful memorial to those who lost their lives in this tragedy and it’s wonderful that they continue to light the luminaries each Christmas Eve to remember them all. You can see more about the memorial here: Italian Hall Tragedy Victims Memorial

Today’s video is an older one from ABC 10 UP, six years ago, when the committee was getting the granite stone with the names of the children engraved. There was a delay, as you’ll hear in the video, the granite stone came with imperfections, so the monument company didn’t accept it and ordered a new stone. You can see it in place there now, in the third photo and is a very fitting tribute for generations to come and remember.

Happy New Year to all. My uncles John and Frank
Sneller were at the Italian Hall Christmas party.
My grandparents worned them not to go, but the lure
of candy and present was too much for them to
resist. My uncle John has told me the story of his
experience. When someone yelled "FIRE", he saw the
children and parents pile up at the end of the
stairway. He also saw a woman pulling her hair out
of her head, screaming. Uncle John took his brothers
hand and went to a window. There he found a plank
to stretched to the adjacent building's window.
Uncle John's grandson has recorded him telling the
story.I could see the sadness in his eyes when he
told me the story. What an awful thing to do to the
innocent children. Uncle John became a motorcycle
cop in Milwaukee. Peace and prayers to everyone.

Happy New Year to all!

We can thank Fred Testa (RIP) for putting the arch
together. He was one of the BEST!~

So, I own this "Perpetual" Calendar. You just flip
the page over and it's got the day, no year.

Today's says:

"When in doubt, show up early. Think less. Feel
more. Ask once. Give Thanks. Expect the Best.
Appreciate everything. Never give up. Make it fun.
Lead. Invent. Regroup. Wink. Chill. Smile. And
live as if your success was inevitable. And so it
shall be."

A happy and blessed 2024 to all.

A beautiful memorial.
Beauty built with tragedy.

What a great remembrance of such a tragic story.

I am trying to imagine the purpose of the gold or bronze colored blocks lining the walkway in photo #1. Do those holes support some sort of temporary handrail or lighting or something similar? They weren't there that last time I took a photo but that time was before the new granite plaque was added.

Never mind.

Now I see the candle inside each block. The hole is to allow the heat to escape.

Happy New Year, everybody.

I knew nothing of this tragedy so thank you for
sharing this. How awful for all involved but what
a beautiful tradition
