Lois Haglund’s back yard in the Crystal Falls area is visited several times a day by both wild turkeys and deer, because they know that they will get something good for lunch and dinner. By the looks of the second photo, if Lois isn’t prompt in putting out feed for the turkeys, at least one comes right up on her deck, looking in the glass door to see if Lois is coming or not. She said if she left the gate open, the deer that visit would probably be up on the deck, too. In the winter, when the snow is getting deeper in the woods, the deer have a harder time finding enough to eat, so helping them out like Lois does supports them through the winter. Same for the turkeys, too. Lois says the bonus for feeding the turkeys is that they eat lots of ticks and with the flock around like this all year, she doesn’t have a tick problem around her property.

The fourth photo is an update on the small buck that Linda Griffin had framed with the Christmas wreath in her window last Tuesday, Dec. 20th. That’s him in the front of the herd in her back yard, all of them patiently waiting for Linda to come out and feed them. With his forked antlers like that, he could probably tap on the door if she’s taking too long.

A week ago today, the Keweenaw Snowmobile Club sent groomers out early in the morning to put down snow and mats on the lower section of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge for safe snowmobile passage between Houghton and Hancock. Visit Keweenaw was on hand to video the event so we can see how it’s accomplished. For regular snowfall and trail updates you can visit their webpage here: Visit Keweenaw

The deer in pic #4 look a wee bit angry, perhaps they should have

brought a little dough.

What great neighbors! And how good of Lois to keep them well fed during the deep snows of Winter. The deer bring the ticks in and the turkeys eat them - great system!

Wondered when they would put the bridge in Winter position. Noticed it was still UP in the recently posted pictures. The sledders are ready to make good use of the crossing.

I love these pictures. It would be a
difficult walk, I think, from the woods to
come to our placeso I'm hoping they went to
one of the many deer feeding staying around
the area. I would LOVE having them come all
year. Way to go, Lois.

We've wondered why there isn't a way for 4
wheelers and side by sides to cross over in
the summer? Inquiring minds want to know!!!!
