Manitou Island is located 3 miles off the tip of the Keweenaw and that’s where Tara Steman and her friend spent the weekend camping recently. She said they had the island all to themselves and how great it was, refreshing and like a life reset. Sure looks like a great place to unwind and get away. The island’s ninety-three acre lighthouse preserve is part of the Keweenaw Land Trust and is open to the public for kayaking, bird watching, viewing the historic structures and rock collecting.
Speaking of rock collecting, we have a video from Michigan Rocks with Rob, his sister Sally and her husband Clovis heading over to Manitou for a rock hunting excursion. It’s just over thirteen minutes, so sit back, relax and check out the rocks they find.

In 2016 I was extremely fortunate to be able to participate in the annual MTU Geoheritage Tour. It's a week long set of expeditions to various Keweenaw geology sites. One day was spent traveling to Manitou Island. One of the guides, Bob, showed some of the agates he's found there (see photos in link). He scuba dives with a hammer and said the best samples are still lodged in the conglomerate.
BTW, Bob is the guy responsible for finding the huge float copper (several tons) off the shore of Great Sand Bay which is now on display outside the A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum.
On a different trip to High Rock Bay I ran into a gentleman with his wave runner. He was doing the same thing with hunting trips to the island.
Camping there would be a dream. Not sure where Tara's campsite was located but for those wondering, about 1/3rd of the island is Michigan State Forest (in green on map). Thus, what is called dispersed camping for up to 15 days in a single location is allowed. To keep things legal, modest paperwork all done by the camper is required.

What a great adventure that must have been. I love the picture of the roaring fire. Such fun to sit in front of a fire and reminisce or just stare into the flames. Thanks for taking us with you.
