From Calumet, all the way to Copper Harbor, the snowmobile trails were busy with the CopperDog 150 mushers, dogs and innumerable volunteers. Judy Byykkonen shares some photos from the start of the CopperDog Friday evening, with artwork that she spotted on a snowbank in Calumet and the CopperDog track down 5th Street in Calumet, six minutes before the race was to begin. Then Judy snapped some of the fireworks the crowd was able to enjoy. Her last photo was snapped as a team came in to the checkpoint in Copper Harbor on Saturday. The weather was decent for Friday, but when Saturday came around, we had freezing rain for a good part of the day and night. Judy said while up in Copper Harbor on Saturday, in snowed, then rained and the wind gusts were nasty. But the dogs and mushers, along with all the volunteers helping carried on, wet or not.
Judy’s video is from the start on 5th Street Friday evening. You can feel the excitement of the crowd and the dogs as they begin the race!

Very cool pictures and video. We planned on going but all of the snow and ice fell off of our roof and we could not get out. That was a project. We definitely moved here the wrong year lol. But if we lived through all they threw at us this year, we should be OK. Thanks, Judy, for taking us along yet again.
