Brian Rendel recently hiked the Grinnell Memorial Nature Sanctuary at Bare Bluff and said he’d be feeling it for a few days. I’m guessing he climbed the trail that folks say is more challenging, with a little rock climbing along the way. From what I understand, if you stay to the left at the fork in the trail, it’s a bit easier climb. Either way you go, the end result is a view that makes it all worth the hike.

A number of reviews mention the bugs as a challenge also. Rumor has it that Uncle Chuck and Marty hiked to the Bluff back in the day and Uncle Chuck got a wood tick the size of a June bug. I don’t know if that’s true or not, it could be a “tick tale”.

The next best thing to actually hiking the trail is a good virtual hike. We join Rick Trudell who says the bluff offers breathtaking views of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula and Lake Superior.

Bare Bluff is the second-best vista in all of the Keweenaw, giving way only to the view north towards Canada from the Greenstone Ridge on Isle Royale.

I am so glad I finally made it to the Bluff in 2016. I will advise folks that if you turn left at the sign (as seen in the video) the trek is much easier with no rock climbing required. The path to the right in the video runs first along the bottom of the bluff before requiring a pretty good climb.

The pinkish rock seen on the outcroppings is a version of magma rock called Rhyolite.

My first and best hike in the UP. Thanks to
everyone for the hike and the memory.

ashes were spread out in front of Bare Bluff when
we had boats. Btw... that's where I'd like to go as

at the curb on Wednesday night trash night like

Lastly, that wood tick was huge, we grilled him up
