Winters here in the Keweenaw can last for five months, with snow and cold temperatures, so if you want to keep from getting bored and like the outdoors, you find things to occupy your time. That’s what Brita Haapala’s kids do. They make use of their pond and turn it into an ice rink in the winter. It’s a job to keep it going all winter, too, because every time it snows, you have to clear the ice, otherwise it turns to slush underneath the snow and your rink is a mess. Brita snapped these shots of their rink a few days ago, with the full wolf moon helping to light the rink and kids playing hockey. If you listen closely, I bet you can hear the slap of the hockey sticks and the chatter of the kids as they play. Her photos bring these scenes to life quite beautifully. You can find more of Brita’s photography talents on her Facebook page, by clicking here: Brita Caroline Photography.
There’s outdoor skating going on in Houghton these days, too. Kids of all ages are enjoying the new Skating Ribbon at the Kestner Park along the Keweenaw Waterway. This aerial magic is a product of the talented photographers at brocket, inc. You can check out other works by them on their Facebook page here: brockit, inc.

You make an excellent point Pat & Glenda!
Brita's pictures almost look like paintings! The first one is spectacular - with the building and the moonlight shining off the snow and the skaters silhouetted against the bright rink. Perfect!!

Hi I agree, JBuck. If there was pond hockey in the day of Currier & Ives...
It's good to see people out enjoying winter. We finally did get enough snow to at least go sledding down here.
