When Melanie Hakala Rossi described the hike she took on Sunday, chronicled in today’s photos, she said it was chilly and icy in places and they definitely had to watch their step. She also mentioned that she’d rather have snow than those icy conditions. That evening, it started snowing and we ended up with 3+ inches of snow here in the Keweenaw. But snow or no snow, these frozen wilderness photos from the area around the Hungarian Falls are beautiful, depicting the cold temperatures in the frozen creeks and runoff.

While Melanie was hiking the Falls area, there was another group of folks that hiked into Horseshoe Harbor in the Copper Harbor area. They mentioned that they were waiting for the “lake effect” snow machine to kick in. I’m guessing we have Melanie and the Horseshoe Harbor folks to thank for the winter weather now. It’s almost snowshoe weather!

Cool vid, BUT..they are showing too many
petroglyphs and begging people to move up here. NO
DON'T....WE WANT THE KEWEENAW LEFT AS THE KEWEENAW!
my two cents. Soon, ain't none of us gonna have
access to Lake Superior!

I had trouble following the video without getting a headache. Slowing the playback speed down in YouTube helped a lot.

Donna,

You might be pleased to know that the petroglyphs at the Mary Macdonald Preserve (Horseshoe Harbor) are not on the Wikipedia list of petroglyph sites. There are 61 sites listed in the U.S. with 2 listed in Michigan. In the spirit of the Cohen Brothers and out of respect for privacy I will not list their locations (both in the lower peninsula).

I'm afraid though that the long term future for Horseshoe Harbor has already been decided. It's actually owned by a $7 billion non-profit organization who also own the Bete Grise wetlands and the preserve at Mt. Baldy. The also own or control over 100 million acres worldwide and almost 10 million acres in the U.S (almost 300,000 acres just in the U.P.). It's called the Nature Conservancy. They made a pretty cool video of Horseshoe Harbor.

Even with their huge size the Nature Conservancy is actually a pretty good non-profit land trust organization. There are several much smaller land trusts that appear to buy up land purely for their own private use and oh yea, a huge tax break at the same time.

Easy fix:
Make the Houghton–Hancock Bridge a toll bridge, where the fares paid with a "PortaPass" — something similar to the Big Mac's (click →) MacPass.

In order to not cause any traffic delays/backups, fares may be paid only with a PortaPass, no cash fares will be permitted. No toll booths, no stopping. PortaPasses will be read remotely, and cameras will record images of both the driver and license plate of violators for prosecution.

PortaPasses must be purchased in advance.

Fares:
Non-residents $20.00 per northbound trip, no charge for southbound trips.
Residents1 $5.00 per year for unlimited trips in either direction.

That'll help to discourage those nasty unwelcome turistas from visiting/damaging the glorious Keweenaw! (Said Frank, facetiously! 😈}
1 Residents of Houghton or Keweenaw County (any others?)
