What do horses do when they’re overheated from a ride with their “people”? Well, they go swimming in Lake Superior of course! Halli Lindley shares today’s fun photos. She told me that these horses love the water more than any other horse she’s met. Riding her horse in Lake Superior has been a dream of hers since she was a kid and now it’s on her annual summer to-do list.

Jasmine is the black Arabian horse, with Halli’s daughter riding and the white horse, a Paso Fino is Sweet Pea. They both seem to love the Big Lake, so they must be Yooper Horses!

Halli also shared a video of her daughter and Jasmine as they headed into the water and trotting back out, refreshed and enjoying the “swim”. If you watch closely, I think you can see Jasmine smiling, too

That sure looks like fun for both rider and horse. Now I'm no horseman but that first picture looks like a bit of a strange riding position. Also, I found it interesting that you could get a horse to head out towards an endless horizon in the water, but like I mentioned, I'm no horseman.

Is that really mother and daughter? They look like twins.

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Friday, August 21, 2020 - 10:07 am:

Nice pics and video!! At first I thought that the
horse ran into the lake and came out, white as a
sheet!! :-)

That is beyond beautiful! WOW!

I share their enjoyment riding in water. I have to
settle for Otter Creek not Lake S. but hey I'm
still riding horses!

Great photos! Those are absolutely beautiful horses.

My mother and I used to ride our horses together all the time. It makes me miss those days.

Janie,

Glad to see you're back on line. Here in the Quad Cities we were hit hard by the Derecho but nowhere near like you guys near Cedar Rapids.

Hello Janie T. (Bobbysgirl)!
Glad to see you back, we've been thinking about you since the Big Blow on Aug 10.
I sure hope you didn't experience any serious damage from El Derecho!

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Friday, August 21, 2020 - 04:21 pm:

Hi JT...I like your profile pic, she's a real
beauty and the horse looks nice too. :-)

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, August 21, 2020 - 06:01 pm:

Yes drecho. We are all ok, Bob, myself, and all 13
horses. Our horse barn was blown totally to the
ground with the roof section blown as far as a
mile down the road. The other barn had damage but
not like the horse barn. Then all the tree
damage, ugh, going to be a big bonfire come
winter. That storm did not leave anybody out. I
heard the winds were estimated at 115 mph.

Hi Mary:

Did Halli say what area along Lake Superior they were riding at? Sand beaches, relatively almost flat slope to the lake bottom and the island in the first two photos sure seem familiar.

A location between Marquette and Munising, perhaps?

JT

The focus so far on the Derecho through here has been on the power outages and personal property damages but what hasn't yet sunk in to many is the national and global impact about to take place as the price of corn, soybeans and meat products spikes higher. Ten's of millions of acres of corn were lost both growing and in storage. Plus a tremendous number of storage facilities were lost so the upcoming harvest will be hard pressed to find storage. They're still trying to get their arms around the costs but it will be in the ten's of billions. But then again, that seems trivial now in our covid era.

So many questions to answer, sorry I didn't get to them until now:

D.A.(Midwested): The strange riding position, was because she was trying to get to a standing position on her horse, but it was too slippery on the bare back of the wet horse to do so!

Alex "UP Goldwinger" (Alex): Yes, they are really Mother/Daughter. Good genes here in the U.P.

J T (Jtinchicago): This was out at Rabbit Bay in the Lake Linden/Bootjack area, out towards Jacobsville and White City. The island in the background is Rabbit Island.
