The Washington Middle School 8th graders had a fun and unique gym class this past week. Gary Lassila shared these photos of them at the Copper Country Curling Club, learning about the sport of curling. Gary said they had one session of instruction and one practice session and the kids were ready for a competition. Some of these kids had also participated in the curling instructions the year before in 7th grade and two of the players on the winning team had won last year, too and were very excited to get the trophy again. How fun to be introducing them to a different winter sport and getting them excited about doing so, too.
Recently the Michigan Economic Development Corporation helped the Copper Country Curling Club with a matching grant for donations that people made, so they could renovate the Curling facility that is housed in the old Copper Mining Drill Shop in Calumet. Gary Lassila talks about all this in today’s video.

I have never understood this game. Probably one
of my least favorite sports to watch. But it is
becoming more and more popular.
