Dear Kathryn Sullivan-
Happy 100th Birthday!! We have enjoyed the pasties that you and your friends make at PastyCentral and heard that you are having a special birthday on December 4th. Congratulations on reaching 100 years old and keep up the good work making those delicious pasties. Sincerely, Jenny, Dave, Christian, Evan and Kelly (friends from Minnesota) |
Dear Kathryn,
Happy 100th Birthday! Got the message through Pasty Central. My husband and I enjoy the pasties we get. I am not a stranger when it comes to pasties. My mother was born in Painesdale Michigan. I spent my summers as a child in Painesdale with my grandparents. I remember Wednesday was pasty day. The ladies at the Methodist Church would make pasties to sell. Everyone in Painesdale would have them for supper. Boy it sure brings back memories. We will be visiting the UP next summer. I have several relatives living in South Range and Painesdale. We are going to stop by and see all of you. I can't wait. Have you always lived in the UP? I would love to visit with you. I enjoy hearing the experiences of people who have led such fulfilling lives. I hope to meet you in the summer when we visit. Have a wonderful birthday celebration. Best Wishes, Barbara Joy |
Hi Kathryn,
Happy Birthday! I can only imagine the amazing life you have led and the changes you have seen in you lifetime, I sure hope that I can be as lucky as you. If you are a local person, you must remember Giacolletto's bar in Toivola which from what I understand, was quite a hopping place in it's day. The building was so beautiful that I just couldn't let it fall into ruin so I purchased it, cleaned it up a little and now have a gift shop in it. If you would like to see it, go to www.rpmcompany.com/country oasis and the picture of the building will be found there. Just thought you'd like to see a little of the copper country heritage preserved for the future! All of us at Country Oasis wish you a very happy birthday and many more! :-) Reid Susmark

Dear Kathryn,
Happy Birthday! I was recently in Scotland and BBC2 (I think) had a special where they rated pasties. They were looking for true Cornish pasties. The broadcast chose 4 cooks and lined up 6 Cornish "experts" to judge the results. Most of the cooks used ground steak but one used chunks of beef. Then there was the butter controversy. One of the cooks "cheated" according to the others by putting a pad of butter in the pasty before cooking (my mom does that). There was also a discussion of the best crimping of the pastry. Most seemed to think a crimp over the top of the pasty was best but the winning pasty had a crimp very much like Still Waters. Finally, there was an argument over whether to put sweet in the pasty and if so how much. My sister and I were not sure but we think they were talking about rutabaga or maybe parsnips--it was a white vegetable but they only showed it chopped up and only called it the sweet. The winning pasty was nearly the same as you would get in the UP except there were no carrots. The judges said the winner must have a fine pastry, moist filling, and savory taste. I bet Still Waters' would have beat them all! As soon as I got home, I sent in an order for a true UP pasty (forget Cornwall we have the best, besides they put Coleman's mustard on theirs). Happy Birthday! I think it is great that you're on the web! Warmest Regards, Janice Knight |

Katherine,
I learned from some Internet friends that you are celebrating your 100th birthday! Happy Birthday!! It must be so wonderful to have experienced life for 100 years. I am 36 years old and feel so fortunate that I have been given the chance to live and share my life with my daughter. I had cancer a few years ago and was lucky enough to have it cured. I wish you a wonderful Birthday and a life full of love and happiness! Sincerely, Suzy Mcginn in Colorado |
Greetings from a family of Pasty Cam fans in California.
Have ordered pasties once for a family birthday celebration here, and plan to do so again soon; they were wonderful. Just like Mom K. used to make! (She grew up in Keweenaw Bay.) We have to keep teaching the younger generations about this part of our heritage. Meanwhile, we check the Pasty Cam pictures nearly every day to see what the weather is doing in Copper Country. When you had all the beautiful fall colors we were envious. Now we're not quite so sure. Anyway, hope your celebration is SUPER!!!!! The Kinnuns Ojai, CA |
Happy 100th Birthday!
Your name sure sounds familiar to me. My name is Barbara Story, however my Dad taught in the Calument School System for 15 years leaving in 1962 I believe. His name was Anton (Tony) Peshek. Also my mother taught in Hancock as well as Calumet. Elma Kolehmainen Peshek. I'm sure she mentioned your name as I said, it sounds so familiar. As my mom and dad are no longer with us, I have no one to ask to see if they knew you. If you remember them, let me know. Again, congratulations on reaching the 100 year milestone. I have set my own goals as high as you have. Have a wonderful birthday, out best to you! Barb (Peshek) Story P.S. I love reading about the UP on the Pasty.com. Brings a touch of the UP to Oklahoma! |
Hello Kathryn,
Many felicitations on your birthday! You are an inspiration to me! I am a part-time resident of the Copper Country - I have a little house in Centennial Heights where I and my children stay every summer. We'd like to stay forever, but my husband, the man who makes all the money, prefers to live in Texas (where his job is) for the time being. Here's a poem for you about animals that is one of our favorites. IN PRAISE OF FEELING BAD ABOUT YOURSELF The buzzard never says it is to blame.
A jackal doesn't understand remorse.
Though hearts of killer whales may weigh a ton,
On this third planet of the sun

We've absolutely loved your website - it's about the only way we can get a glimpse of the land we love EVERY DAY when we are not there. Hope you have a wonderful party and wish we could be there! Judy, Barry, Kevin and Karina Endsley

Happy Birthday to you!
If you taught in the Houghton Public schools, you may remember my great-aunt Gertrude Matson Lawler. She taught in Houghton for many years herself! I am the granddaughter of Gertrude's sister, Helen Matson Thomas. Helen and my grandfather met in Ann Arbor when they were both teaching. Helen was a math and Latin teacher, Russel taught English. I am also a school teacher and am writing you from my classroom, as my students read and write summaries from the Cleveland Plain Dealer! I teach English in a Vocational High School to juniors and seniors. I really enjoy it, and feel that today's youth are much beeter than we give them credit for! Hope you have a happy celebration! Hello Kathryn & Happy 100th Birthday!
I saw the announcement about your 100th birthday and the nice picture of you on the web! I want to congratulate you on your great accomplishment, and tell you that I think you look just great! My wife and attended Michigan Tech, and we love the copper country and can't wait until we have enough money saved to move back there and retire in "God's country!" (We're only 34 though, so I'm afraid our jobs here in Connecticut will have to do for a while!) We've purchased pasties from www.pasty.com, and you guys to a TERRIFIC job on them...not only are they great pasties, but they make us feel a little closer to the UP, even though we are way out here in the east. Congratulations & take care! Tom Leonard
