From England:

Well, Happy Birthday, Kathryn!  : )))

Hope the day finds you well and happy - how's life in the U.P. these days? I'm from Sault Ste Marie, originally, but I'm in the Air Force now stationed in England.  I'll be moving again in March, to Denver Colorado...but I miss the U.P. and of course those wonderful pasties!

I imagine it's snowing already up there - are you getting settled in for winter??  The next time I'm in the U.P. I'll definitely stop by and say hello...  : )

Take care and Happy Birthday!!!

Sian M. Lindsey

Even though I've only read about you on the "Pasty News", I wanted to send my best wishes for a wonderful 100th birthday!  Hope you have a fabulous day!

Sign me as one who is the proud granddaughter of a hard-rock miner and one who always enjoyed her summer vacations at her grandmother's home in Ironwood and who is looking forward to hopefully someday living in the U.P. when we retire from the Air Force, say in 5-10 years......

Congratulations,
Kathryn Yost (temporarily in central Georgia)

P.S.  Good grief - I almost forgot - I love your pasties....they're delicious!!!

I am a fan of the Pasty Central site and when I received the message of your 100th birthday celebration, I wanted to send my warm wishes your way.

I hope this extremely special day will bring you joy.

Congratulations and Happy Birthday from Philadelphia, PA.

 Dear Kathryn,

Happy 100!!! What a wonderful number that is and what a super lady you must be!
My husband's family is from Bessemer - U.P. and we get lots of pasties from you folks because no one around here knows how to make them. (we tried once and the results were disappointing to say the least) I'm an Irish girl from St.Paul, Minnesota and we never ate them there. I eat mine with applesauce and my husband just likes ketchup on his. They're so good. Well, many good wishes to you!!

I just want to wish you the best on this achievement of reaching this birthday.  Of course, it is because you have lead a good life, & helped many by your presence. I envy you for having been a school teacher, I love kids, & was going to school myself when an unforunate accident occured that left me disabled.  I am now raising 5 grandchildren (all under age 9)- 9,6,5,4,and almost 2. I spend alot of time fixing the house so I can accomplish this in a better fashion. It just hurts so bad not to be able to pick them up, but I manage to get down & play with them on the floor & give them lots of loving!!  They are my angels.  The two oldest help give baths, & put the only girl (Kayla-almost 2) in her high chair for meals.  Plus, they decorated the tree, which is a very small one, as they prefer to honor Jesus birthday rather than gifts, gifts, gifts, We make special gifts for each in the family. I take them one by one & we do it after I have put the others in bed. They like their special time with grandma & they get to stay up 1/2 hour later.  Must go, the little one just woke up!! Sorry, I will keep your e-mail, if that is O.K.  with you, & write again.

May God Bless Your Special Day.

Kathryn,

You were my 5th grade teacher! I really enjoyed your class. My name was/is Barb Boorman Williams. I really hope you have a grand day!

My mom, Betty and sister Liz are here in Nevada with me for the holiday. We think about the UP often and Mom is planning on retiring soon and moving back.

I have been living in Fallon, NV for 12 years now and really enjoy it. But I do enjoy returning to the Copper Country for visits. Well, I will let mom & Liz know today is your birthday and maybe they will send a note!

Again, Happy Birthday!

Barb

Ms. Sullivan,

Congradulations on your birthday.

I remember you reading to us every morning at the beginning of class.

Dear Kathryn:

I want to join the many others who are wishing you a special Happy Birthday this year!  100!!  A real achievement!

I am the son of Janet Elise King Heyl (born in Calumet in 1910) and the grandson of Alice Nelson King (a music teacher and player in the Calumert Opera House, with her husband, who directed the company band).  I was born in Los Angeles, where the Kings moved in the 1920's after the copper "bust" at that time.  The King house was on Calumet Ave. in Calumet.  I have visited it several times in the past 20 years or so.

Anyway, I hope you have a great birthday - and maybe a pasty before your birthday cake!

Yours,

 John Heyl

Well HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!  Have a great day -- we'll be thinking of you.

My Grandmother was born and raised in Atlantic Mine (a little south of Houghton). I attended Michigan Tech (in the early 60's), so I have many great memories of that area. My family used to attend a church camp at Michigamme for many years also -- but today they have all grown (it happens) and we have not attended for 4 or 5 years.

Again -- have a great birthday!!!!!

Happy Birthday! Congratulations on your 100th Birthday, Kate!
This occasion has brought back many great memories;

I remember having your sister, Mame as a teacher at the Morrison School. How Aunt Is spent every Sunday night at your house. Almost like the Sullivans and MacDonalds were related. It seems we always included your family in everything our family ever did. I remember Having to stop by your house every Christmas Day to visit with your mom and all. As a teenager growing up I always had a crush on your brothers, Pat & Jerry. I thought they were the best looking guys I have ever seen. Then good hearted Neil who took care of your mom, you and me.  Remember the summer when the war was over and Mom & Dad were away and you helped me and grampa Anderson take care of the store. When grampa had his stroke even Mame came to help out. I remember Sunday afternoon's you stopping at the cottage on your Sunday drives with Aunt Isabel. I remember the card games in the store when Ida, Noby, Is Fisher, Gob would come and play almost every night. I recall your specialty was bridge. I remember Jerry working for dad and you filling in when his secretaries went on vacation. Jerry taking Jimmy Rowe on the truck when making deliveries. When Jerry taking over Dad's business and Jimmy becoming his driver. Then after Jerry's untimely death, Jimmy Rowe taking over.  Seems like the Sullivans, McLean Sister's and our family were always doing something together.

I am still working. It doesn't seem like 14 years since Al passed away. I'm planning on retiring this next year and moving back to Calumet. I can't wait for that time to come. Loving memories. Take care and have a great, great day.

Fondly,

Betty Boorman, MacDonald's Newsstand

I want to wish you a happy 100th birthday!  I remember you but don't expect you to remember me'
